Job summary

The City of Suffolk Police Department is seeking an experienced Communications Operator for its Emergency Communications Center. You will answer Emergency 911 and non-emergency calls, dispatch Police, Fire, EMS, and Animal Control, and operate a multi-line telephone system with CAD and radio equipment.

Strong communication and professional relationship-building are essential in this 12-hour shift role. Qualifications include high school diploma or GED, VCIN/NCIC certification, EMD training, CPR

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED and Basic Dispatcher State certification.
• Current or previous VCIN/NCIC certification.
• Proof of Emergency Medical Dispatch Training completion and current CPR certification.
• At least two years of experience in public safety dispatching.
• Two of the following certifications preferred: DCJS General Instructor, DCJS Specialty Instructor, Crisis Intervention Team Certification, COM Training Operator.

Responsibilities

• Answers Emergency 911 and non-emergency calls.
• Dispatches Police, Fire, EMS, and Animal Control to calls for service.
• Operates multi-line telephone system and TDD for the deaf and hearing impaired.
• Monitors CAD and radio consoles, relays information to field units.
• Facilitates language interpretation between callers and interpreters.
