Job summary

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is seeking an ELL & Staff Translator to support ESOL services. The role involves translating between English and Spanish, interpreting for IEP meetings, and serving as a liaison to Spanish-speaking FSDB families and staff.

The position supports ELL students and collaborates with ESL programs on campus. The incumbent will assist in maintaining student language ELL records, coordinating with the ESOL department, and helping plan events for ELL

ELL & Staff Translator - Position Number 48008670

Department: ESOL

Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact

The incumbent in this position reports to the Director of ESOL Services (Director) and is responsible for working with English Language Learners (ELL) students, communicating with Spanish speaking families and assists in an educational setting.

  • Responsible for translating from English to Spanish and Spanish to English to better serve the target population as well as serving as an Interpreter at all Spanish speaking ELL students' IEP meetings and other meetings with students/families and staff. Provides translation for non-ELL students as necessary. Acts as liaison to and from Spanish speaking families (ELL and non-ELL) with staff. Facilitates communication between Spanish-speaking FSDB families and the school. Responsible for translating student-related documents from English to Spanish or vice versa, as needed for staff, students and Spanish-speaking FSDB families. Interprets in emergencies for the school and Spanish-speaking FSDB families. Provides Spanish interpretation for the school as needed for student incidents, included but not limited to health and/or behavior related.
  • Provides assistance to Director which includes planning for special events for ELL students and the ELL Parent Leadership Council meeting, assists in the ESOL office and maintains ELL students' class lists and files. During state ACCESS for ELLs testing, assists Director in maintaining a secure chain of custody of the ACCESS for ELL testing materials. Establish and maintain updated lists of blind/visually impaired and deaf/hard of hearing ELL students, and files which include each ELL file review, Home Language Survey, ELL reports, IEPs/IEP reviews (Spanish translation copies), data information, ACCESS for ELLs testing results, progress reports, general correspondence, etc. Assists with the ELL cultural awareness and competency initiatives for the FSDB campus. Collaborates with community agencies and organizations to assist FSDB families to access available resources in their communities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to have oral and written proficiency in English and Spanish;
  • Ability to organize and plan effectively;
  • Ability to visually read, write and speak fluently in Spanish and English;
  • Ability to organize and maintain comprehensive student records;
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse groups;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with families, staff, students and stakeholders;
  • Ability to assist in a classroom with Limited English Proficient students as needed;
  • Ability to use a personal computer, O365 applications, and Adobe Acrobat;
  • Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPR.
  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24.
Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of Associate's Degree, knowledgeable in working with students and their families, oral and written proficiency in English and Spanish, ability to visually read, write and speak fluently in Spanish and English, ability to use a personal computer, superior organization and attention to detail, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with families, staff, students and stakeholders.

Preferred:

Bachelor's Degree, knowledgeable in working with English Language Learners (ELL) students and their families, particularly to communicate with Spanish speaking families, knowledgeable in Microsoft O365 applications, and Adobe Acrobat, ability to organize and maintain comprehensive student records, knowledgeable about IDEA, FERPA, and other state and federal education laws, familiar with ESE and ESOL terminology, IEP meetings and documents.

Sign Language Requirements:

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Intermediate proficiency in sign language within four years of hire.

Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills

Hiring Salary Range:
11 month position : Calendar includes Leave Without Pay days; $44,956.80 - $52,456.80 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience

*Base $44,956.80

Additional Related and verified Full-time Experience (20-year max) addl $150.00 per year

Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm
