Job summary

Newport News Public Schools seeks a Cheerleading Coach to lead and mentor student athletes in competitive cheer techniques and routines. You will coach during practices and meets, develop schedules, and coordinate with the athletics director for facilities.

You will assess skills, assign positions, monitor academic eligibility, and promote good sportsmanship. Strong communication with parents and administrators is essential.

Qualifications

• Some experience as a competitive Cheerleader coach at the high school or college level preferred.
• Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
• Must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
• Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.

Responsibilities

• Coach cheerleaders during practices and meets.
• Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages student participation.
• Assesses skills and assigns team positions.
• Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time for development.
• Works with the athletics director to schedule facilities for practices and competitions.
• Coaches and instructs cheerleaders regarding rules, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
• Observes cheerleaders to determine needs for improvement.
• Maintains standards of pupil behavior and proper supervision.
• Monitors academic performance to ensure eligibility requirements are met.
• Follows procedures for injuries and communicates with parents as necessary.
• Follows regulations governing the program and promotes cheerleading to media and organizations.
• Maintains supplies, uniforms, and equipment records.
