Job summary

The NYC Department of Buildings is seeking an Elevator Inspector to examine construction, alteration, and safety of elevators, escalators, and related devices for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, and approved plans.

The role includes responding to incidents, witnessing safety tests, issuing violations, verifying licenses, and maintaining detailed records. A PE or Architect license is preferred for higher placements.

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time elevator-related experience or equivalent.
• Knowledge of NYC Construction Codes and related laws.
• Proficient computer and data recording skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect elevators, escalators, amusement devices for compliance.
• Respond to accidents and complaints and document findings.
• Witness safety tests on high‑speed elevators.
• Issue violations, stop-work orders, and verify licenses.
• Testify as needed and maintain inspection records.
• Explain and enforce relevant laws and rules.
