Job summary

Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles seeks a full-time Elementary School Instructor to teach K-5 with a trauma-informed focus. You will design instructional services, assist with intake, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support children and their families.

The role requires an Associate’s Degree (Bachelor’s preferred), 24–36 Child Development units, and at least one year of classroom experience, plus a valid driver’s license and trauma-informed experience.

  • Supervise volunteer classroom aides and monitor attendance.

Job description

Elementary School Instructor $18.42 – $28.85/Hour

Good Shepherd Shelter (GSS) is a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles and is the first transitional domestic violence shelter in Los Angeles, CA. GSS provides a safe, nurturing environment in which mothers and their children can heal, reawaken their dignity and self-confidence, and learn the skills that will help them stop the cycle of domestic violence.

The Shelter is seeking a full-time Instructor for K-5th, willing to teach multiple grade levels in the Shelter school. The teacher will strive to imbibe the four essential values of GSS’ philosophy: individual worth, dignity, mercy, reconciliation and zeal for the healing of each person.

Under the direction of the school supervisor, the Instructor will design/provide direct instructional/educational services for children at the School and support/educate families as a team. This includes planning and direct implementation of instructional services individually and in a classroom setting. Assist with child/parent intake and participate and interact with other professionals in meetings.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and teach lessons for a group of approximately five to eight children in various academic and co-curricular subjects with a trauma-informed focus.
  • Plan/implement various activities for the whole group, such as sports, outdoor activities, crafts and art.
  • Work closely with the Interdepartmental team (teachers, therapists, apartment staff, and Program Director) in coordinating services and ensuring quality of services for each client.
  • Attend weekly teachers’ meetings and monthly in-service training sessions.
  • Manage volunteer classroom aides for individual children in the group.
  • Record daily classroom attendance and assignment/test grades.
  • Evaluate every child upon arrival to the shelter utilizing both traditional and non-traditional schooling assessments.
  • Hold parent-teacher conferences to help facilitate parental involvement according to school expectations.
  • Support trauma-informed classroom setting and curriculum by implementing behavioral and social skills to assist students healing from trauma.
  • Gain understanding of empowerment philosophy and apply to interactions with mothers and children.
Requirements
  • Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor Degree preferred
  • 24-36 Child Development units required
  • At least one year of classroom experience
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Experience in a trauma-informed environment
Wage Range

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
