Position Overview
RSU 38 / Maranacook Area Schools is seeking a school counselor or school social worker to serve elementary-level students by fostering a student-centered educational environment conducive to learning and personal growth by supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of all elementary students. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with administration, staff, families, and outside providers, and will have the opportunity to work with students and collaborate with staff at our district elementary schools.
Responsibilities
- Providing individual, small-group, and classroom-based social and emotional support to students.
- Assessing student needs, including support systems, emotional functioning, peer issues, barriers to academic performance, and safety concerns.
- Designing and delivering proactive programming that improves student outcomes, and consulting with teachers on classroom strategies.
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring student support plans, and participating in student support, IEP, and 504 team meetings as appropriate.
- Providing crisis response and safety assessment, and participating in district crisis response protocols.
- Maintaining accurate, confidential records consistent with district policy, state law, and the professional standards of the candidate’s discipline.
- Conducting home visits and traveling among district schools as assigned.
- Advocating for students and connecting families to community resources; collaborating with outside providers and agencies.
- Providing training and workshops for teachers, school staff, and parents as applicable.
Qualifications
- Candidates must meet the requirements of one of the following two tracks: School Counselor track
- Master’s degree in counseling with a concentration in school counseling.
- Valid Maine Department of Education School Counselor certificate (075), or eligibility for it.
- Commitment to the ethical and professional standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and to the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage, and assess. School Social Worker track
- Master’s degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
- Current license from the Maine Board of Social Worker Licensure (LCSW, LMSW, or LMSW-Conditional Clinical), or eligibility for it.
- Commitment to the ethical and professional standards of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Required of all candidates
- Strong understanding of and empathy for the needs of students.
- Knowledge of current research, theory, and practice.
- Works with staff and administration and represents the school effectively to parents and the community.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Maine Department of Education criminal history records check (fingerprinting) prior to employment. Preferred Experience
- Strong preference for experience working directly with elementary-aged students.
- Strong preference for experience in a public school setting.
- Experience with multi-tiered systems of support, restorative or trauma-informed practices, and collaboration with community mental health providers.

$47,500 - $84,575 degree level & experience
