Job summary

Ann Arbor Public Schools is seeking an Elementary Reading Assistant to provide small group and individualized reading instruction across grade levels. This hourly position offers up to 8 hours per day based on availability, funded by Section 31a grant and without benefits, through the 2026-2027 school year.

Required: Bachelor's degree; MI elementary teaching certificate preferred; experience with striving readers; LETRS training is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support teaching reading using district approved instructional and intervention resources

• Communicate regularly with building literacy coach, classroom teachers, and building principal
• Work collaboratively with Building Support Team
• Evaluate academic and social growth of students, keep anecdotal records, and prepare progress reports
• Regular and reliable attendance

POSITION TITLE: Elementary Reading Assistants

LOCATION: To Be Determined

SALARY: $41.59 per hour (with valid MI teaching certificate)

$16.50 per hour (without valid teaching certificate)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Principal, ELA Curriculum Coordinator, Building Literacy Coach

POSITION SUMMARY

This is an hourly (up to 8 hours per day based on availability/preference) position for a knowledgeable and skilled instructor who will provide small group and/or individualized reading instruction at a variety of grade levels across schools. This is a Section 31a grant funded position, which does not provide benefits and may not be renewed after the 2026-2027 school year.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree required
• Possession of Michigan elementary teaching certificate, desired
• Experience working with striving readers
• Willingness to or has completed LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling)

• Ability to coordinate and collaborate with building staff
• Ability to use multiple platforms and tools to deliver online instruction, if needed

LANGUAGE SKILLS

• Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators
• Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

• Add, subtract, and multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

REASONING ABILITY

• Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
• Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

• Work with parents and children of diverse cultural backgrounds
• Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community
