Sugar Creek Charter School is seeking an energetic, student-centered Elementary Health & Physical Education Teacher to provide high-quality health and physical education instruction to elementary students.
The ideal candidate will create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that promotes physical fitness, healthy habits, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness. The teacher must be able to differentiate instruction to meet the developmental and physical needs of all students, including students with disabilities.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Current North Carolina teaching license appropriate for the position.
Knowledge of developmentally appropriate elementary Health and Physical Education instruction.
Ability to provide safe, structured, and engaging instruction for students with a wide range of abilities.
Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, school leaders, families, and student support teams.
North Carolina Adapted Physical Education (APE) add-on license.
Previous experience teaching Health and/or Physical Education at the elementary level.
Experience adapting physical education instruction for students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
Experience collaborating with Exceptional Children (EC) teachers and related service providers.
Plan and deliver standards-aligned Health and Physical Education instruction for elementary students.
Develop students’ skills in movement, coordination, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, personal wellness, and healthy decision‑making.
Establish and maintain a safe, positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
Differentiate and adapt activities, equipment, instructional strategies, and expectations to ensure meaningful participation for students of varying abilities.
Provide appropriate accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and other student plans.
Collaborate with EC teachers, related service providers, classroom teachers, and administrators to support student needs.
Monitor student progress and use assessment information to adjust instruction.
Teach and reinforce appropriate safety procedures for physical activity, equipment, and instructional spaces.
Maintain, organize, and appropriately use physical education equipment and instructional materials.
Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership.
Participate in professional development, staff meetings, school events, and other activities required of instructional staff.
Support schoolwide expectations related to student culture, attendance, behavior, and academic success.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or school leadership.
When serving students requiring adapted physical education services, the teacher will:
Provide individualized or specially designed physical education instruction based on student needs and IEP requirements.
Implement accommodations, modifications, and specialized instructional strategies that increase student access and participation.
Collaborate with EC staff, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other related service providers as appropriate.
Participate in IEP meetings when needed and provide information regarding student performance and progress.
Collect and maintain appropriate progress-monitoring data for students receiving adapted physical education services.
The position requires the ability to actively participate in and supervise physical activities, demonstrate age‑appropriate movement and fitness skills, move and organize physical education equipment, and provide active supervision in indoor and outdoor instructional environments.
