Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking a part-time crossing guard to help elementary students cross streets safely near school entrances. The position starts in October 2026 with a pay rate of $17.35 per hour, up to 2 hours per day, as determined by the building administrator.

The role requires vigilant supervision of crosswalk activity, clear communication with students and staff, and adherence to district policies on safety. Training for school crossing guards is highly desirable.

Qualifications

• Completion of district training for school crossing guards is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of crosswalk safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to work cooperatively with building staff.
• Ability to exercise fairness in dealing with students.
• Ability to establish and maintain relationships in a multicultural, diverse setting.

Responsibilities

• Stops oncoming traffic using a flag to permit student to cross safely and notes gaps to minimize disruption.
• Monitors students' activities and behavior near the crosswalk and stays alert for unsafe situations.
• Reports inappropriate student behavior and vehicles that fail to stop when signaled.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
