Job summary

Great Oaks Legacy Charter School in Newark, NJ seeks AmeriCorps members as Elementary AmeriCorps Tutors to support literacy and math for elementary students and foster belonging and success. Job description

Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is seeking dependable, student-centered AmeriCorps members to serve as Elementary AmeriCorps Tutors. Members work alongside teachers to provide consistent literacy and mathematics support for elementary students and help every student experience school as a place where they belong and can succeed.

What You Will Do
  • Support assigned students during ELA, math intervention, WIN, Strong Roots, and Response to Intervention (RTI) programs, including Power Up and Saturday Academy.
  • Reinforce teacher-led lessons through prompts, feedback, encouragement, and targeted one-to-one or small-group support.
  • Lead teacher-prepared math centers, fluency routines, or conferences and conduct planned reading-fluency conferences using approved materials.
  • Help students use i-Ready My Path and other approved learning tools productively.
  • Build caring, professional relationships; use approved behavior supports; and promptly report safety or student-welfare concerns.
  • Prepare materials; record attendance and progress data; complete accurate timesheets; and attend required onboarding, training, coaching, in-service days, meetings, and service events.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and ability to meet AmeriCorps State and National eligibility requirements.
  • U.S. citizenship, U.S. national status, or lawful permanent resident status.
  • Ability to provide required eligibility documents and complete National Service Criminal History Checks and GOLCS clearances before covered service begins.
  • Tutoring, mentoring, coaching, volunteering, youth-development, literacy, or elementary-math experience is preferred but not required.
  • Passion for service, commitment to equity, and belief that all students can succeed.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and commitment to consistent, relationship-centered support.
  • Clear communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills.
  • Openness to coaching and ability to apply feedback and follow procedures.
  • Organization, ability to meet deadlines, and comfort using basic technology and data systems.
  • Collaborative problem-solving and maturity when working with students, teachers, school leaders, and other AmeriCorps members.

Members must complete 1,200 verified service hours by June 17, 2027 and monitor their progress throughout the term. Members serve on designated in-service and training days and participate in required events, which may include Saturday Academy, Power Up, MLK Day of Service, AmeriCorps Week, Career Day, an end-of-year celebration, and Commission-hosted events. Some required service may occur outside the typical Monday-Friday schedule with advance notice.

  • Living allowance: The AmeriCorps Living Allowance and the number of pay cycles may vary depending on your assigned start date. Service Members who complete the Three-Quarter Time term (1,200 hours) receive a pre-tax living allowance of $14,400 for the full service year. The estimated pre-tax living allowance is distributed on biweekly payments. Please note that the precise living allowance total and bi-weekly payment details will be clearly outlined in your offer letter and/or during the onboarding process.
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,176.50 after successful completion of the 1,200-hour term and all program requirements.
  • Eligible members may request student-loan forbearance and payment of accrued interest, subject to AmeriCorps rules.
  • Pre-service orientation, ongoing coaching and training, career development, and access to applicable AmeriCorps alumni resources.
