Job summary

RTX is seeking an intern in Tucson to support the Electro-Optics (EO) Department on optical design, alignment, and subsystem integration. You will gain hands-on experience across design reviews, production support, and test fixture development while expanding knowledge of telescope and seeker systems.

The role is onsite at RTX's EO facility, with opportunities to learn from experienced engineers and contribute to real-world missions in defense technology.

Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's or Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related STEM major and actively enrolled through the end of the internship/co-op session.
  • Optical design or systems integration and test experience or coursework in optical testing and alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and assist on development programs across subsystem architecture, integration, and hardware design.
  • Support as mentee and Individual Contributor on program activities.
  • Perform optical alignment/testing of telescope assembly processes.
  • Conduct EO modeling, simulation, and analysis applications.

At Raytheon , the Electro-Optics (EO) Department is responsible for requirements decomposition, detailed design and production support of the EO Sensors/Seekers, including the detectors, cryogenic systems, and structures making up the sensor/seeker subsystems. The multi-disciplined department includes engineers that may be responsible for the following: Designing, modeling/analyzing, and verifying optical components within a sensor/seeker designing the structures that hold the optics, including any mechanisms needed to move optics, as well as the cryogenic systems used to cool and maintain the temperature of EO detectors. Relaying critical detector interface and performance requirements to detector suppliers and verifying requirements are met. Utilize many different engineering discipline skills to assemble, test and verify optical, electrical, and mechanical components as they are built up into the sensor/seeker subsystem

What You Will Do:
  • The Intern will be responsible for spending their time learning and assisting on development programs and will be asked to be flexible while learning subsystem architecture, subsystem integration, or hardware design as well as innovation related roles that could include design, design review, production support, process and metric development.
  • Participate as mentee and Individual Contributor supporting program activities.
  • Optical alignment/testing of telescope assembly processes.
  • EO modeling, simulation, and analysis applications.
  • Requirements development, requirement validation, and subsystem trade studies.
  • Design of optical and opto-mechanical seeker systems and/or test fixtures for missiles.
  • Working with engineering and production personnel to troubleshoot and provide root cause and corrective action to design and process issues.
  • Support production related activities in the assembly and documentation of electro-optical subsystems.
  • This position is an onsite role.
Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Must be pursuing Bachelor's or Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) major and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co-op session.
  • Optical design or systems integration and test experience or coursework in one or more of the following areas: optical testing and alignment, optical laboratory experience.
Qualifications We Prefer:
  • ABET is the preferred, although not required accreditation standard. 3.0 cumulative GPA desired.
  • Class projects, professional internships, or academic research demonstrating the ability to apply technical coursework or computer skills.
  • Using Computer Analysis Tools (MatLab, CodeV, FRED, or Microsoft Excel for EO modeling, simulation, and analysis applications.
  • Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.
