Job description

This is a technical position involving tasks such as traffic signals, on-site repair of electronic devices, computer-based signal systems, roadway/sign lighting, and all Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Devices throughout Division Twelve. Responsibilities include diagnosing and correcting issues with state traffic control equipment, hardware/software, including over 900 traffic signals and flashers, and programming signals in fiber optic, isolated, and wireless radio (ENCOM) closed-loop systems.

Applicants must be able to provide training and technical support to Electronics Technician I’s, maintain records, communicate effectively with contractors, co-workers, and the public, and assist with contract development and administration. The role requires the ability to use standard computer programs, operate a bucket truck for emergency responses, and work on-call 24/7, often outdoors in variable weather and on uneven terrain for site reviews, inspections, and utility coordination. Supervisory duties may include managing traffic signal technicians and scheduling tasks.

Applicants must submit an application demonstrating experience in:

  1. Using standard test equipment for diagnosing and repairing electronic components.
  2. Reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
  3. Applying principles and practices in the installation, revision, repair, and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control systems.
  4. Planning, scheduling, and executing work with minimal supervision.
  5. Applying MUTCD, NC DOT Standard Specifications, NC DOT Roadway Drawings, and the National Electric Code.

Additional Requirements:

Safety toe shoes are required. The candidate must legally operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement, or obtain one within 360 days of hire through on-the-job training, complying with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Qualifications:

Associate's degree in electronics from an accredited institution and two years of experience in repairing and maintaining complex electronic systems, including some design responsibilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant licensure may be required based on job duties.
