Job summary

Gurley Precision Instruments in Troy, New York, seeks an experienced Electronic Technician for test and assembly of precision electro-mechanical instruments. You will assemble, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair complex equipment, building prototypes from drawings and engineering concepts.

The role requires 5+ years in electronics, strong schematic reading, and expertise with analog/digital electronics.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in electronics assembly, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration.
  • Strong knowledge of analog and digital electronics.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Experience assembling precision electro-mechanical and electro-optical equipment.
  • Proficiency using electronic diagnostic and measurement equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, adjust, calibrate, and test precision encoder and electro-optical instruments.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, electronic, optical, and mechanical issues on production and prototype units.
  • Perform final adjustments to ensure products meet quality, performance, and accuracy standards.
  • Build prototype units from sketches, verbal instructions, and engineering concepts.
  • Modify, fabricate, and repair electronic circuits and assemblies for engineering and production applications.
  • Develop tooling, fixtures, and procedures to support new products and manufacturing improvements.
  • Build electrical test fixtures for new products with minimal engineering direction.
  • Coordinate prototype parts, special orders, and vendor-supplied components to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Assemble mechanical subassemblies and complete final instrument assembly.
  • Perform repairs and troubleshooting on customer instruments, including custom prototype equipment with limited documentation.
  • Use engineering software to document, troubleshoot, and maintain prototype information.
  • Operate electronic and precision test equipment, including oscilloscopes, signal generators, frequency counters, laser interferometers, and other diagnostic instruments.
  • Source replacement parts and coordinate material needs for production and repair work.
  • Train and mentor assembly personnel in assembly techniques, alignment, phasing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Independently resolve electrical and mechanical problems on both prototype and production units.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electronic Technician to join our manufacturing team. This hands-on position is responsible for the assembly, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of precision electro-mechanical and electronic instruments. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated problem solver with extensive experience in electronics, prototype development, and precision assembly who can work independently with minimal engineering direction.
