Job summary

Atomic Industries in Detroit is seeking an EDM Operator / Electrode Designer to extract and design electrodes from 3D mold models and to program and operate sinker EDM machines to burn precise details into hardened tooling.

This hands‑on role works closely with mold design, CNC machining, and assembly teams to ensure electrodes and burns meet dimensional, surface finish, and quality requirements while promoting efficient cycle times and repeatable processes.

Qualifications

• 3+ years in sinker EDM operation and/or electrode design in a mold/tool environment.
• Solid understanding of EDM: spark gaps, overburn, electrode wear, SPI/VDI finishes.
• Proficiency extracting and designing electrodes in Cimatron (or CAD/CAM).
• Experience machining graphite and copper electrodes on CNC equipment; read 3D models and 2D drawings.
• Familiarity with hardened tool steels and precision measuring tools.

Responsibilities

• Extract and design electrodes from 3D mold models using Cimatron.
• Program and machine graphite and copper electrodes on CNC milling equipment.
• Set up, align, and operate sinker EDM to burn cores, cavities, ribs, and lettering.
• Establish and optimize burn parameters and electrode sequencing by geometry and surface finish.
• Reference electrodes and workpieces for accurate location, depth, orientation.
• Meet SPI surface finishes and dimensional tolerances on mold features.
• Inspect electrodes and burns with micrometers, height gauges, and CMM data.
• Maintain electrode tracking and documentation for repeatability.
• Perform routine EDM maintenance including dielectric fluid and holders.
• Incorporate improvements from experience into future electrode work.
