Job summary

Matrix Plastic Products, a quality-driven plastics specialist, seeks a Sinker EDM Operator to set up, program, and operate sinker EDM equipment for precision mold components. You’ll collaborate with mold makers, CNC machinists, engineering, and quality to meet exact specs and schedules.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, 3+ years EDM experience in mold or precision machining, and familiarity with GD&T and CAM tools such as NX/SolidWorks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred.
  • 3+ years sinker EDM experience in mold making or precision machining.
  • Experience with plastic injection mold construction/repair is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, GD&T, and tech specs.
  • Familiar with CAM software such as NX or SolidWorks; EDM principles understood.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor sinker EDM machines to manufacture precision mold components.
  • Interpret blueprints, CAD models, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Install, align, and qualify electrodes and workpieces.
  • Create or edit EDM programs using machine controls or CAM software.
  • Verify dimensions with precision measuring equipment and document results.
  • Maintain machine cleanliness and perform routine maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot issues to ensure dimensional accuracy and production efficiency.
  • Collaborate with mold makers on new builds, repairs, and engineering changes.
  • Record machining parameters and inspection results accurately.
  • Support continuous improvement, safety, and quality standards.

Description

Matrix Plastic Products is a quality-driven custom manufacturer of ultra-precise plastic components and subassemblies for medical devices and other mission-critical applications. Our specialties are plastic injection molding, mold making, and assembly. Founded in 1978, we are looking for an experienced Sinker EDM Operator to help run projects through our EDM department. The Sinker EDM Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating Sinker EDM equipment to manufacture, modify, and repair precision components used in plastic injection molds. This position works closely with mold makers, CNC machinists, engineering, and quality personnel to produce high-quality tooling that meets customer specifications and production schedules.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up, operate, and monitor sinker EDM machines to manufacture precision mold components.
  • Interpret blueprints, CAD models, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Install, align, and qualify electrodes and workpieces.
  • Create, edit, or optimize EDM programs using machine controls and/or CAM software.
  • Verify dimensions and surface finishes using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gages, and other advanced measurement equipment when applicable.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain proper machine cleanliness.
  • Troubleshoot machining and process issues to ensure dimensional accuracy and efficient production.
  • Collaborate with mold makers during new mold builds, mold repairs, engineering changes, and production tooling support.
  • Document machining parameters, inspection results, and completed work accurately.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve quality, efficiency, and safety.
  • Comply with all company policies, safety procedures, and quality standards.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training in machining, mold making, or manufacturing preferred.
  • Three (3) or more years of sinker EDM experience in a mold making or precision machining environment preferred.
  • Experience with plastic injection mold construction and repair strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
  • Working knowledge of EDM machining principles, electrode design, and precision tooling.
  • Experience machining hardened tool steels and using graphite and copper electrodes.
  • Familiarity with CAM software such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar.
  • CNC machining is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
Physical Demands / Working Conditions:
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position or move throughout the manufacturing facility during the workday.
  • Frequently position oneself to inspect, load, unload, and set up tooling and machine components.
  • Frequently operate machinery, computers, and precision measuring instruments requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Frequently communicate with coworkers regarding work instructions, production status, and safety information.
  • Ability to visually inspect machined components, tooling, and measuring equipment, including distinguishing fine detail.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull materials and tooling weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance. Mechanical lifting devices are available and should be used when appropriate.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machine noise, oils, coolants, metal dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and required.
  • May be required to work overtime or adjusted schedules to meet production demands.

Compensation:

Pay: $25 - $35 per hour (depending on experience)

Hours:

Expected hours: 40 - 50 per week (Mon-Fri), depending on workload. This position is in-person.
