Job summary

The City of Kenner is seeking an Electrician to perform skilled electrical maintenance and repair for the General Services Department, including buildings, street lights, and related systems. The role may lead Electrician I and II staff and reports to the Superintendent.

Responsibilities include assigning and reviewing jobs, instructing crews, maintaining work orders and records, installing fixtures, wiring, and conductors, repairing breakers, servicing generators, and responding to emergencies

Qualifications

  • Requires a vocational school diploma supplemented by three or more years of electrical maintenance and repair experience.
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana Class D driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Electricians; obtain job assignments, assign and review work, and report to the Superintendent.
  • Perform building maintenance: install fixtures, replace bulbs/ballasts, outlets, and breakers; service AC.
  • Construct/renovate electrical sites, install conduit, wiring and panels; troubleshoot overhead and underground work.
  • Maintain generators, street lights, and assist with special events and emergencies.
  • Maintain records: work orders, logs, checklists; manage shop and truck inventory.

General Description

ONE CURRENT VACANCY 40 HOURS PER WEEK POSITION Under general supervision, performs skilled electrical maintenance and repair work in the maintenance of facilities and related equipment and systems for the General Services Department. Work involves electrical installation, maintenance, and repair of all buildings, facilities, street lights managed by the General Services Department. Team leads the performance of work by Electrician Is and Electrician IIs. Reports to the Superintendent.

Duties of Responsibilities Serves as lead person for Electricians; obtaining job assignments from the Superintendent; assigning and completing jobs; instructing employees; reviewing work; and reporting to the Superintendent on completion of jobs and any issues. Performs building maintenance such as installing new fixtures; replacing bulbs and ballasts; replacing outlets; resetting breakers; checking air conditioning, etc. Performs construction site work such demolishing and remodeling new and old electrical sites, installing electrical pipes, conduit etc. Troubleshoots overhead and underground electrical work; installs new heads; rebuilds and repairs streetlights. Maintains, installs, and repairs generators. Provides assistance with special events such as setting up events, building equipment for correct operation, monitoring operations, etc. Examines jobs locations for correct method of work and necessary materials. Records completed work order tickets with description, time, materials, and work completed. Maintains shop and truck inventory, orders supplies, stocks shelves, pulls materials for jobs, etc. Performs after hour call outs on a rotating basis and as needed for emergencies or special events. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as memorandums, work orders, emails, etc. Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as work orders, daily logs, meeting minutes and truck checklist. Refers to underground street light system, maps, wiring schematics, technical drawings, National Electric Code, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, instructions, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications, reference texts, websites etc. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as pickup truck, dump truck, boom/bucket truck, excavator, heavy equipment, fault locator, etc. Uses a variety of tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, nut driver set, wrench set, cordless drill, hole saw set, knock out set, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as wire, junction boxes and covers, duplex receptacles, switches, light bulbs, electrical panels, traffic lights, general office supplies, etc. Uses a variety of standard office tools, office supplies, and computer software such as word processing, spreadsheet, work order tracking system, email, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Chief Electrician, Electrician I and II, Public Works and City employees, contractors, and the general public.

Additional Job Functions

Picks up materials from vendors. Performs related duties as required. Essential duty status position, will be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a vocational school diploma supplemented by three or more years of electrical maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Louisiana Class D driver’s license.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Comprehensive medical benefits options are provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana. Coverage is effective the first of the following month, following full-time employment. Dependent coverage is also available. The City of Kenner also offers voluntary insurance plans: DENTAL, VISION, and SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE PLANS (VOLUNTARY LIFE, CANCER, ACCIDENT, CRITICAL ILLNESS, HOSPITAL CONFINEMENT, LONG-TERM DISABILITY and SHORT-TERM DISABILITY).

LIFE INSURANCE

All full-time employees are insured under a Group Life Insurance policy through Prudential Life Insurance Company. The coverage is one and half times the employee's salary, up to $300,000. The policy also provides a Basic Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit. The premium cost is covered by the City of Kenner. Coverage is effective the first of the following month, following full time employment.

RETIREMENT SYSTEM

The City of Kenner's regular full time employees are enrolled with the Municipal Employees Retirement System of Louisiana. Both the City of Kenner and the employee contribute the required percent to the system. The employee's contributions are kept on account and will be refunded, if the employees leaves employment before they are retirement eligible.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION

The City of Kenner currently participates in a 457 Plan with MassMutual. This is a voluntary investment program that the employees are allowed to participate in at a contribution rate of their choice (must be within the designated maximum and minimum limits, as set for by Plan Document). The City of Kenner does not contribute to the 457 Plan.

HOLIDAYS

Sixteen paid official holidays are observed, plus any other holidays which may be declared by the Mayor.

ANNUAL AND SICK LEAVE

Eligible Kenner employees earn annual leave and sick leave. Accrual of hours will increase based on the number of years of service.

WORKING TEST PERIOD

Upon appointment to a position in the classified service, the employee shall serve a working test period of six (6) months, unless extended.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a program which provides a professional to help employees and their families to resolve problems. This service is 24 hrs. / 7 days per week, voluntary participation and confidential.
