Non‑Exempt (eligible for overtime compensation under FLSA). Position is benefits‑eligible.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$6,365 per month (Step 4) – $7,457 per month (Step 12)

CSU Classification Salary Range

$5,998 per month (Step 1) – $8,737 per month (Step 20)

Salary Step Placement

Salary step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM (30‑minute lunch). Work hours may include evening and weekends, dependent on department needs. Position works on‑site. This position will begin on a day‑shift schedule for several months for training purposes. After successful completion of training, the schedule will transition to the regular swing shift hours listed above.

Department Information

The Electrical Shop, part of Facilities Management, plays an essential role in supporting the University’s mission by ensuring a safe, reliable, and fully operational campus environment. The team maintains nearly all campus electrical systems, including primary and secondary distribution systems, underground infrastructure, interior circuits, panels, transformers, switchgear, and all indoor and outdoor lighting. Electricians contribute to daily operations as well as Special Repair and Minor Capital Outlay projects that directly support teaching, learning, research, and student life. Facilities Management serves as the steward of more than 50 buildings across 616 acres. The department maintains and renovates facilities, plans and manages new construction, and advances University initiatives by creating a welcoming and dynamic environment for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Knowledge

Work requires thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.

Abilities

Must be able to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses; operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record‑keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi‑skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

Experience

These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey‑level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to use a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ability to use standard office software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Strong knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Ability to inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments.
  • Working knowledge of fire alarm systems design and maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of the configuration and maintenance of high voltage systems (e.g. substations, primary and secondary gear).
  • Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade.
  • Ability to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses using all applicable tools and equipment for skilled electrical work.

Licenses
  • Possession of a current California General Electrician certification with the State of California, Department of Industrial Relations.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of good driving record.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs. maximum.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE.
Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to complete the background check process.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four or more years of experience as a journey‑level electrician.
