Duties & Responsibilities:
VCU Facilities Operations provides timely, quality workmanship andservice delivered in a cost-effective manner to support theuniversity’s mission. Facilities Operations serves to be thefacilities maintenance and service provider of choice for ourcustomers.
VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire anElectrician for Facilities Operations .
The Electrician utilizes knowledge of the electrical tradeto perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation ofbuilding infrastructure ensuring efficient operation of Zonefacilities; provides exemplary customer service to all faculty,staff, and students supporting the University’s mission oft eaching, high-impact research, and creative expression; identifiesand documents system deficiencies using diagnostic tools andadvises management of tasks requiring priority attention; andprovides quality workmanship and service to maximize systemavailability and minimize unscheduled downtime.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Reactive/Service Work
- Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosisand repair of various building infrastructure, such as fume hoods,exhaust systems, fire alarm systems, electrical distributionsystems, lighting systems, motors, motor starters, low voltagecontrols, electrical portion of mechanical equipment, variablefrequency drives and other electrical equipment/systems utilizingspecialized knowledge of electrical theory and practice
- Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosisand repair of plumbing, and mechanical systems
Preventive Maintenance
- Independently perform and complete regularly scheduledpreventive maintenance to various building infrastructure, such asfume hood and exhaust systems, motors, electrical distributionsystems, lighting systems, and other electrical/mechanicalequipment/systems
Customer Service/Teamwork
- Works in a collaborative and collegial manner throughout thedepartment, division and University
- Interact with others to collectively resolve problems,accomplish mutual goals, and foster an atmosphere of trust.
- Share information and ideas to improve customer service andpromote Facilities Management’s goals.
- Listens to and anticipates customer needs; provides clearexplanations; responds quickly; takes initiative to assist internaland external customers.
- Communicates respectfully to internal and externalcustomers.
Communication and Monitoring Work of Others
- Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipmentmaintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priorityattention.
- Communicate orally and in writing regarding work schedules,system problems, estimated completion times and effects of systemproblems on occupant safety and comfort.
- Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniquesof the trades to increase their skill level and ability to workindependently.
- Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assurecompliance with specifications, codes and drawings.
Designated/Other Duties
- Other duties as assigned.
- Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies.
- Assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis.
Computer Skills/AiM
- Utilize computer skills to access email and researchparts/information as required.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of AiM and AiM GO ensuring promptcompletion of work requests and time card entry following allestablished work flow processes, including notes logs for all workrequests over 30 days.
Organize Mechanical Areas
- Clean and organize materials in the Shop and mechanicalareas.
- Participates in periodic cleaning of shop.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Several years’ experience in commercial/institutionalelectrical and mechanical maintenance
- Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide variety of electrical and mechanical systems
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision,other employees, and customers
- Knowledge of appropriate building codes
- Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications, andscopes
- Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and powerequipment
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required
- Virginia Driver’s License required
- State of Virginia Journeyman Electrical License required or theability to obtain within the first year of employment
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years' experience in commercial/institutional mechanical andelectrical maintenance preferred
Salary Range:
$70,000 ($33.65/hr) - $75,000 ($36.05/hr) + upto $2,500 Sign-on Bonus
