Duties & Responsibilities:

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire anVentilation Technician for FacilitiesOperations.

The Ventilation Technician utilizes knowledge of theelectrical/mechanical trade to perform preventive maintenance,repair, and installation of of building infrastructure, primarilyexhaust and fume hood systems ensuring efficient operation of Zonefacilities; provides exemplary customer service to all faculty,staff and students supporting the University’s mission of teaching,high-impact research, and creative expression; identifies anddocuments system deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advisemanagement of tasks requiring priority attention; and providesquality workmanship and service to maximize system availability andminimize unscheduled downtime.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Performance Management
  • Expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to thegoals and objectives of the department or unit
  • Staff receive frequent, constructive feedback
  • Staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities toaccomplish goals
  • The requirements of the performance management system are metand evaluations are completed by established deadlines with properdocumentation.
  • Performance issues are addressed and documented as theyoccur.
  • Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to ensure a safeand health workplace.
Respond Independently to Service Work
  • Independently assign, respond, and complete service work ordersrequiring diagnosis and repair of fume hood and exhaust systems,electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, electricalportion of mechanical equipment, motors, motor starters, lowvoltage controls, and other electrical/mechanicalequipment/systems.
Preventive Maintenance
  • Independently assign, perform, and complete regularly scheduledpreventive maintenance to fume hood and exhaust systems, motors,electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, and otherelectrical/mechanical equipment/systems.
Communication & Maintain Records
  • Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipmentmaintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priorityattention.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with building occupants andsupervision regarding work schedules, system problems, estimatedcompletion times, and effects of system problems on occupant safetyand comfort.
  • Maintain records of equipment services and repairs.
Monitor Work of Others
  • Provide work site guidance and direction to other zone teammembers, assuring safe and orderly completion of service requestsand projects.
  • Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniquesof the trades to increase their skill level and ability to workindependently.
  • Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assurecompliance with specifications, codes, and drawings.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies
  • Assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Several years’ experience in commercial/institutionalelectrical or mechanical maintenance
  • Electrical or HVAC courses I, II, III, code classes, basic andadvanced training or equivalent combination of experience andtrade/craft training
  • State of Virginia Journeyman Electrical or HVAC Licenserequired or the ability to obtain within the first year ofservice
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide varietyof electrical and mechanical systems
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision,other employees, and customers
  • Knowledge of appropriate building codes
  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and powerequipment
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Ability to be on-call required
  • State of Virginia Journeyman Electrical or HVAC Licenserequired or the ability to obtain within the first year ofservice
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism, and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Salary Range:

$70,000 ($33.65/hr) - $75,000 ($36.05/hr) + upto $2,500 Sign-on Bonus
