Description of Work

We will be recruiting for two (2) positions with this job posting. Your application will be considered for both positions.

The Electrician performs scheduled maintenance, inspections, and repairs to ensure compliance and functionality of electrical systems.

Key Duties Include

  • Inspecting and repairing electrical systems, fixtures, and lighting (e.g., exit/egress lights)
  • Maintaining campus lighting and electrical appliances
  • Participating in renovation projects involving electrical work
  • Testing and servicing emergency power generators
  • Performing preventive maintenance to meet accreditation standards
  • Working safely from ladders, scaffolds, and aerial lifts

This position plays a vital role in maintaining operational and safety standards across facilities.

This position is expected to fulfill On-Call and emergency call-back assignments and is considered a mandatory position that must report to work during periods of adverse weather. Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This position is part of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Property and Construction, Facility Maintenance team responsible for maintaining the North Carolina State Laboratory and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (SL/OCME) facility located on District Drive in Raleigh, NC. The SL/OCME facility is 261,000 SF state-of-the-art facility with highly technical and complex building systems. This position will require strong technical experience, knowledge, and skills and the ability to function as a technical expert including evaluating and making final decisions regarding maintaining highly complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, fire suppression, and security building systems.

The Division Of Property And Construction

The Division of Property and Construction supports the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services by managing its statewide facilities portfolio, which includes 18 state-operated campuses totaling over 7.7 million square feet and 148 leased properties covering approximately 1.2 million square feet. The division provides maintenance, housekeeping, and grounds services for the Dorothea Dix Campus and basic maintenance and grounds support for the Governor Morehead School. It also oversees the Department’s Capital Improvement Program, managing repair and renovation efforts as well as new capital projects from planning through close-out.

Listed below are the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) associated with the position. Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experienced in troubleshooting and diagnosing issues in secondary electrical systems and equipment.
  • Working knowledge in low-voltage electronic building control systems and components.
  • Skilled in reading blueprints and schematics to repair electrical systems and devices.
  • Experienced with single-phase and three-phase electrical distribution systems.
  • Trained in applying National Electrical Code standards and working at heights up to 60 feet.

Management Preferences

  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of electrical systems, equipment, and components within a commercial or industrial setting.
  • NC Limited Electrical License.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades;

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Physical Requirements: HEAVY WORK - Exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Work may be performed in extreme environmental conditions including adverse weather conditions.
