Job summary

The College of New Jersey is seeking an Electrician in the Facilities Operations, Electric Shop, to perform installation, repair, and maintenance of campus electrical systems in accordance with codes and standards.

Applicants should have at least three years of experience, and may qualify with a New Jersey Electrical Contractor license; colorblindness test may be required. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to work in all weather.

Internal salary: Range 16 Steps 1-11 /Salary: $52,308.32 -$75,945.22

External salary: Range 16 Steps 1-4/ Salary: $52,308.32 -$59,402.09

The internal salary range is used for applicants who are currentNJ state employees with underlying classified status forpromotional calculations who meet the requirements below.

Position Overview

The Department of Facilities and Administrative Services is a largeoperational service organization that provides a broad array ofservices to the campus community through the following areas:Access Control Services, Automotive Services, Building Services,Energy and Central Utilities, Facilities Operations, Grounds andLandscape Maintenance Services, Mailing and Receiving Services,Occupational Safety and Environmental Services, and Risk ManagementServices. This position resides within the Electric Shop of theOffice of Facilities Operations. Works from electrical sketches,schematics, plans and specifications in accordance with theelectrical code or approved trade practices and establishedprocedures.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Electric Shop, the Electricianperforms skilled electrical work in the installation, repair,adjustment, and maintenance of campus electrical systems andequipment. This position ensures that electrical systems are safe,reliable, and compliant with applicable codes and standards whilesupporting the College's mission of providing a well-maintainedlearning and working environment.

Qualifications
  • Ability to analyze the problems involved in the maintenance andrepair of electrical circuits, systems and equipment, including 480volts and lower voltages; and, have the ability to effectivelycommunicate with supervisor, colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated broad experience in commercial/industrialenvironment as an electrician in work involving the installation,inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of electricalsystems, circuits and related equipment.
  • Must be able to walk distances in all weather conditions,navigate stairs, climb ladders, utilize scaffolding or poweredlifts, kneel, negotiate tight spaces, and work in highspaces.
  • Must be capable of lifting tools, materials and equipmentcommensurate within the functions of this position (up to 70pounds).
  • Must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditionsyear-round.
  • Must be able to endure limited lighting situations with extremetemperatures (e. g. non-air-conditioned spaces) when accessingattic spaces and roof access locations.
  • Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a busy,fast paced environment.
  • Must work in buildings that may not have elevators to movematerials in and out of the facility, and must rely on stairs tonavigate through said buildings.
Required
  • Three (3) years of experience in work involving theinstallation, inspection, repair, servicing and the maintenance ofelectrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits.
  • NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the requiredexperience may substitute a current Electrical Contractor licenseissued by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs for three(3) years of experience.

Preferred
  • High School Diploma
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing issuedby state of residence is required. Responds to calls for emergencyassistance and overtime, both emergency and scheduled, pursuant todepartmental protocol.
  • Knowledgeable in preventive maintenance of all types ofelectrical circuits, systems and equipment, including 480 volts andlower voltages.
  • Ability to install, repair and/or maintain all types ofelectrical circuits, systems and equipment, including 480 volts andlower voltages.
  • Carries departmental radio at all times to receive calls forservices and to request assistance.
  • Ensures that all work areas and shop area are clean and clearof debris and equipment. Ensures that cleanup is completed prior tothe end of the workday and/or job assignment.
  • Complies with all college occupational health, safety, securityand environmental regulations and procedures.
