Job summary

The Smithsonian Institution is seeking an Electrician to provide electrical services across its facilities, installing wiring systems, fixtures and controls to support mission, safety and visitor experience.

The role requires journeyman or master electrician licensure, a valid driver’s license, and readiness to work evenings, weekends and emergencies as needed to restore operations. Applicants must pass background checks and meet physical requirements.

Job description

Duties

The Electrician provides electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for the mission, health, comfort and safety of occupants and visitors and serves under the general supervision of the Craft Shop Supervisor.

In This Position, You Will
  • Provide electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment for the mission, health, comfort and safety of occupants and visitors.
  • Repair, modify, maintain and troubleshoot the premise wiring systems of facilities to include interior and exterior wiring, lighting, control circuits, emergency and standby power systems and signaling circuit wiring together with all their associated hardware, fittings and wiring devices, both permanently and temporarily installed.
  • Require extensive adaption of methods, including the fabrication, installation, modification, and/or troubleshooting of specialized electrical control or monitoring systems and equipment designed to meet unique conditions associated with research projects.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Must have an active or inactive Journeyman or Master electrician's license. (You must upload a copy with your application)

  • Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.
