Job summary

Federal Reserve System is seeking a Senior Electrician in Washington, DC. The role ensures proper installations, repairs, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical lines, systems, and equipment.

The incumbent provides guidance to team members and may serve as essential personnel during emergencies. Responsibilities include leading apprentices, installing wiring and conduits, overseeing asset replacements, reading schematics, and maintaining high and low voltage systems, as well as generators

Qualifications

  • Experience with advanced training in the electronic field.

  • Journeyman/Master electrician's license preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical codes, motors, motor control systems, switch gear systems (medium and low voltage), low voltage lighting controls systems, and 277-volt fluorescent lighting.
  • Expertise in using testing equipment such as megohmmeters, voltage meters, and amp meters, plus core drills and related tools.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction blueprints and schematics.
  • Commitment to a strong customer service philosophy.

Summary The Senior Electrician is responsible for ensuring that installations, modifications, repairs, troubleshooting, loads and tests of new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems fixtures, controls, and equipment are done properly. Provides guidance and technical expertise to team members. The incumbent of this position has been designated as essential personnel, and as such will be expected to report to work or work extra time even if the Board is officially closed during emergency situations, such as inclement weather. Non-exempt employees will receive overtime if appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides leadership and guidance to other team members (including any apprentices) in all areas of the job. This includes demonstrating proper work methods, answering questions from co-workers regarding procedures, work orders, policies, written instructions and other directions, and assuring adherence to appropriate safety procedures. Performs the more technically difficult work of the section.

Installs wiring, conduit, cable trays, and other devices for electrical, voice and data systems to include fiber optic cabling. Maintains, services, and repairs all electrical equipment and devices to include motors, starters, breakers, switches, variable speed drives, audible signal systems, and other devices.

Serves as the overseer during major electrical asset replacement, acquisition, and renovation projects as required.

Uses blueprints, wiring, diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, and continuity, while assuring the proper and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.

Maintains, services, and repairs high voltage (13,800 VAC) transformers, switchgear, wiring distribution systems, and their sub-components.

Maintains, services, and repairs all lighting systems, low and medium voltage systems and their sub-components.

Maintains, services, and repairs emergency electrical generators (diesel driven), power distribution networks, and transfer systems.

Maintains, services, and repairs uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Utilizes an automated system for tracking and maintaining spare parts, inventory, corrective and preventive maintenance actions, and time and productivity.

Keeps abreast of state-of-the-art equipment and new techniques in the electrical profession by attending trade shows and national electric code certification programs.

Assist with maintenance, service, and repair of the Board's automated access control and fire alarm systems.

Substitutes in other areas as the workload dictates.

Position Requirements

Experience with advanced training in the electronic field required. Must be able to interact and display tact and diplomacy at all levels within the Board staff. Journeyman/Master electrician's license preferred. Requires a thorough knowledge of electrical codes, motors, motor control systems, switch gear systems (both medium and low voltage), low voltage lighting controls systems, and 277-volt fluorescent lighting. An extensive background in power and distribution electrical circuitry, and an ability to read and comprehend construction blueprints and schematics are required. Also required is an expertise in using sophisticated electronic testing equipment, such as megohmmeters, voltage meters, and amp meters, and the ability to utilize core drills, hydraulic and hand knockout cutters, bench drills and hand tools. Must show a demonstrable commitment to a strong customer service philosophy.

Physical Demand/Work Environment

Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms as parts of systems worked on are in hard-to reach areas. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. May be required to lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds. Work is done inside and outside and can be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Makes repairs to sanitary sump pumps used for the disposal of human waste. Sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in bad weather and in work areas that are noisy. Occasionally exposed to possibility of electrical shock and burns. Exposure to noise, battery acid, high voltage, and cleaning chemicals. Potential exists to work around hazardous materials.

Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Incumbent has contact with all staff levels at the Board while servicing equipment and making service calls.

US Citizenship is required. This position requires an in-office presence in Washington, DC.
