Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Facilities Electrical Protection & Controls Engineer to design, operate, and maintain power distribution protection schemes. You will perform short-circuit studies, relay coordination, arc flash analysis, and configure protective relays (SEL) across substations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
  • Minimum five years of experience in electrical protection & controls.
  • Master's in electrical engineering preferred.
  • Proficient with ETAP or similar software.
  • Familiar with IEEE and NFPA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, operate, and maintain electrical protection and control systems for power distribution.
  • Perform short circuit, protective device coordination, and arc flash analyses.
  • Develop protection setpoints and logic for microprocessor-based relays (e.g., SEL).
  • Review diagrams, schematics, and drawings for protection and control accuracy.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and with Operations on substation automation projects.
  • Conduct arc flash risk assessments and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure design conformance with IEEE/NFPA standards and support ICE reviews.
