Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Facilities Electrical Protection & Controls Engineer to design, construct, operate, and maintain electrical protection and controls for power distribution across the campus electrical infrastructure.

The role requires five years of experience in protection & controls, strong ETAP proficiency, and collaboration across engineering and operations teams, with safety and reliability as top priorities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum five years of directly related experience in electrical protection & controls.
  • Professional Electrical Engineer license in CA preferred or eligible within one year.
  • Proficient in ETAP or similar software.
  • Knowledge of protection & control equipment lifecycle cost analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, operate, and maintain electrical protection and controls for power distribution.
  • Perform power system studies: short circuit, coordination, arc flash analyses using ETAP.
  • Develop one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and logic diagrams.
  • Collaborate with electrical design, project, plant, and operations engineers.
  • Analyze faults and relay mis-operations; determine root causes and provide mitigations.
  • Design substation protection schemes and setpoints for AES/SEL relays; review as-left files.
  • Conduct arc flash risk assessments and develop mitigation plans.
  • Prepare technical plans, review ICEs, and scope P&C upgrades.
  • Design power monitoring, communication, and SCADA systems.
  • Represent department on project teams and review committees.
