Job summary

GEMCO Constructors, LLC offers an Electrical Internship in Carmel, Indiana, with regular time on active job sites in the Indianapolis region. This summer 2027 program runs 10 to 12 weeks at 40 hours per week, paying $22.00 to $25.00 per hour.

You will work with the project manager, superintendents, and foremen on live industrial power distribution, feeder, and control work, gaining hands-on exposure to estimates and field decisions.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Building Construction Management, or a related program.
• Sophomore standing or above preferred, though strong first-year students will be considered.
• Ability to work in an office and on active construction sites with required PPE.
• Familiarity with electrical systems and the National Electrical Code is a plus.
• Developing skill reading plans and specifications; comfortable with takeoff math.

Responsibilities

• Support active industrial electrical projects: power distribution, switchgear, feeders and branch circuits, controls, and low voltage systems.
• Track gear submittals, requisition materials, and monitor long lead equipment.
• Assist estimating with takeoffs, PO tracking, and pricing for scope changes.
• Maintain panel schedules, circuit docs, and drawing revisions for field team.
• Attend coordination and progress meetings and record commitments.
• Walk sites with superintendents and foremen to verify work against drawings.
• Help prepare progress, cost, and schedule reports and support monthly billing.
• Support temporary power planning and site logistics coordination.
• Assist with testing docs, punch lists, and closeout packages.
• Follow GEMCO safety expectations at all locations.

Location: Carmel, Indiana main office, with regular time on active job sites in the Indianapolis region

Reports to: Project Manager, Electrical, National Industrial, with mentorship from the Director of Electrical

ABOUT THE ROLE

This internship sits inside GEMCO’s National Industrial electrical group, on projects in the Indianapolis region. You will work alongside the project manager, superintendents, and foremen on live industrial power distribution, feeder, and control work, and see how code, design, and estimating decisions land in the field.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Support active industrial electrical projects: power distribution, switchgear, feeders and branch circuits, controls, and low voltage systems
• Track gear submittals, requisition materials, and monitor long lead switchgear, transformers, and generators
• Assist the estimating team with takeoffs, purchase order tracking, and pricing for scope changes
• Maintain panel schedules, circuit documentation, and drawing revisions for the field team
• Attend coordination and progress meetings and record what the team owes back
• Walk sites with the superintendent and foremen, verify installed work against the drawings, and support manpower planning
• Help prepare progress, cost, and schedule reports, and support monthly billing and contract financial tracking
• Support temporary power planning and site logistics coordination
• Assist with testing documentation, punch list tracking, and closeout packages
• Follow GEMCO safety expectations in the office and on every site you visit

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• How an electrical scope is estimated, bought out, staffed, and managed through energization and closeout
• Why equipment lead times drive the schedule, and how project managers plan around them
• How to read one line diagrams, panel schedules, and feeder plans, and how the National Electrical Code and design decisions shape what gets installed
• How a project manager protects the financial side of a contract while keeping the customer relationship strong
• Direct exposure to our project managers through The GEMCO Way, our project manager training program

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

• Working toward a degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Building Construction Management, or a related program
• Sophomore standing or above preferred, though we consider strong first year students
• Able to work in an office and on active construction sites with the required personal protective equipment
• Coursework or practical exposure to electrical systems and the National Electrical Code
• Developing skill in reading plans and specifications, and comfortable with the math behind takeoffs
• A motivated self starter, organized and steady with follow through on open items
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook

HELPFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED

• Prior construction, trade, or field experience of any kind
• Exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, AutoCAD, or Revit
