Job summary

Spectrum Control is seeking an Electrical/Mechanical Designer to create, revise, and maintain complex drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing routers across the product lifecycle. You will work with limited supervision and guide less-experienced teammates, improving CAD/documentation processes.

The role emphasizes leading technical documentation, ECN processing, and collaboration with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality to ensure accurate records and compliant design workflows.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Create and revise complex electrical and mechanical product drawings using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Cadence OrCAD, and other design tools.
• Update drawings and documentation based on ECNs, ensuring revisions are accurate and controlled.
• Assist with PCB layouts, mechanical designs, tooling, and amplifier designs.
• Verify component fit and identify manufacturability concerns in product layouts.
• Develop and maintain bills of materials, manufacturing routers, and other product documentation.

Job Summary: The Electrical/Mechanical Designer is an experienced individual contributor responsible for creating, revising, and maintaining complex electrical and mechanical drawings, product layouts, bills of materials, manufacturing routers, and related technical documentation. Working with limited supervision, this position supports Engineering and Manufacturing throughout the product lifecycle by managing part-number assignments, processing engineering changes, resolving documentation discrepancies, and ensuring product records remain accurate and properly controlled. The Designer also provides technical guidance to less-experienced team members and supports continuous improvement of CAD and documentation processes.

Essential Job Functions

• Independently create and revise complex electrical and mechanical product drawings using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Cadence OrCAD, and other applicable design tools.
• Update drawings and technical documentation based on approved Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), ensuring revisions are accurate, complete, and properly controlled.
• Assist Design Engineering with printed circuit board layouts, mechanical designs, specialized tooling, and thin- and thick-film amplifier designs.
• Perform product layout activities to verify component fit, support design visualization, and identify potential assembly or manufacturability concerns.
• Create detailed illustrations and documentation of product assembly methods for use by Manufacturing.
• Develop and maintain accurate bills of materials, manufacturing routers, travel tickets, and other product documentation.
• Assign and maintain part numbers for finished products, purchased components, technical documents, inspection methods, and manufacturing records.
• Create and maintain schematic symbols and printed circuit board footprints within OrCAD.
• Enter and maintain accurate engineering and product information within the AS/400 KBM system and other applicable databases.
• Independently process ECNs through the company’s document-control system and assess their impact on drawings, bills of materials, routers, and related manufacturing documentation.
• Review drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and compliance with company standards.
• Identify and resolve design and documentation discrepancies in collaboration with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Configuration Management.
• Maintain accurate and current electronic records related to engineering designs, revisions, and manufacturing processes.
• Provide drafting and documentation support as directed by the CAD and Documentation Manager.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and backup support to less-experienced designers and documentation personnel.
• Recommend improvements to CAD standards, documentation processes, part-numbering practices, and design workflows.
• Support CAD and documentation needs at other Spectrum Control locations as directed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree or technical certification in mechanical design, electrical design, drafting, or a related discipline preferred.
• 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in electrical/mechanical design, engineering drafting, or product documentation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, with demonstrated experience using Cadence OrCAD.
• Experience creating and maintaining OrCAD schematic symbols and printed circuit board footprints.
• Experience supporting printed circuit board layout, mechanical design, specialized tooling, or electronic product packaging.
• Working knowledge of CorelDRAW or similar technical illustration software.
• Strong working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), engineering drawing standards, and configuration and revision-control practices.
• Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining bills of materials, manufacturing routers, part-number records, and engineering documentation.
• Experience independently processing ECNs and evaluating their impact on product and manufacturing documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
• Experience using ERP, MRP, or product-lifecycle management systems; experience with AS/400 or KBM is preferred.
• Familiarity with engineering part-numbering systems and document-control practices.
• Ability to use calipers, calculators, CAD reference materials, and traditional drafting equipment as needed.
• Ability to independently manage multiple assignments, identify documentation discrepancies, and coordinate their resolution.
• Experience providing technical guidance, training, or backup support to designers or documentation personnel.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, problem-solving ability, and commitment to documentation accuracy.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Configuration Management, and other functional teams.

Work Environment

• This position is based on-site at Spectrum Control’s Fairview, Pennsylvania facility.
• Work is primarily performed in a professional office or cubicle environment using a computer and CAD software for extended periods.
• The position requires regular interaction with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Configuration Management, and Document Control personnel.
• Occasional time may be spent in manufacturing or production areas to review products, verify designs, take measurements, or support documentation needs.
