Job summary

Austal USA is seeking an experienced Electrical/Controls Engineer for our Alabama facility in Mobile. You will oversee design calculations, drawings, and department progress under the direction of the Sr Department Manager & Program Engineer.

The role requires a bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) and 7+ years in design or marine construction, with strong knowledge of power distribution, automation, and NEC/IEEE standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of design and/or construction experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Understanding of scheduling and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee department goals for a specific project as directed by the Program Engineer and Sr Department Manager.
  • Prepare, oversee and assign design calculations and drawing development to support program goals.
  • Check calculations and progress department work.

REPORTS TO:

Sr Department Manager & Program Engineer

SUPERVISES:

Engineer III, Engineer II, Engineer I, Designers and Draftspersons

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for overseeing Department Goals for a specific project as directed by the Program Engineer and Sr Department Manger
  • Responsible for preparing, overseeing and assigning design calculations and drawing development to support Program Goals
  • Responsible for checking calculations
  • Responsible for progressing all department work
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum 7 plus years of design and/or construction experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers
  • Computer literate and familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products
  • Thorough knowledge of ship and propulsion systems
  • Strong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (i.e. ABS, DNV, GL, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, etc.)
Electrical/Controls Engineer:
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree or minimum 10 years of equivalent marine design experience
  • Thorough knowledge of power distribution and lighting systems
  • Thorough knowledge of automation, control and communication systems
  • Strong working knowledge of IEEE and NEC
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experienced in the construction of high-speed aluminum vessels preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of large modular construction methods preferred
  • Experienced in design and construction of US Navy vessel preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of shock design preferred
TOOLS:
  • Computer - MS Office, AutoCAD
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
  • Will manage and direct the work of Engineers Designers and Draftspersons
  • Will determine technical adequacy of drawings and calculations
DISCRETION EXERCISED:
  • As directed by Sr. Department Manager and Program Engineer
  • Will provide input to evaluations of Engineers Designers and Draftspersons
  • Has authority to direct, evaluate and correct the work of Engineers Designers and Draftspersons
LIAISES WITH:
  • Engineers, Production Personnel, Customer, Regulatory Bodies, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required Security Clearance.
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to a background check
