Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer (Powerplant Design Focus)

Location: Kansas City, MO / Mission, KS

Project Focus: Power Generation, Electrical Substations, Transmission & Distribution (T&D), and Industrial Utility Infrastructure

Work Setting: Hybrid Flexibility Available

Salary: $130,000 – $185,000+ (Depending on experience and licensure) + Professional Overtime Pay, Annual Bonus Potential, and Profit-Sharing Pension

Are you a visionary power systems engineer ready to step out of a narrow production role and command high-impact, critical utility infrastructure projects? We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a principal technical advisor and catalyst for complex energy modernization initiatives. In this role, you will not simply execute designs; you will architect the future of power generation facilities, steer multidisciplinary project teams, and leave a lasting legacy on the nation’s critical energy infrastructure.

Joining our team means immersing yourself in a highly collaborative, autonomous culture built on nearly eight decades of technical excellence. This role balances hands‑on, sophisticated engineering with strategic project leadership and the active mentorship of rising engineering talent. With a highly lucrative compensation package—including professional overtime pay and a wealth‑building profit‑sharing pension—this is the ultimate platform to elevate your expertise across power plants, substations, and industrial utility modernizations while charting a direct path into executive technical leadership.

Core Responsibilities
  • Power Systems Engineering & Architecture: Lead and master‑plan the electrical engineering design for complex steam electric generation facilities, combustion turbines, combined heat and power (CHP), cogeneration, and backup diesel generation systems.
  • Advanced System Analysis: Perform and oversee rigorous electrical engineering calculations and critical system evaluations, including protective device coordination, load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies.
  • Technical Deliverable Ownership: Develop, review, and approve high‑fidelity technical deliverables, including one‑line diagrams, circuit schedules, panel schedules, and comprehensive electrical equipment specifications.
  • Multidisciplinary Project Stewardship: Manage and coordinate multiple high‑priority utility and infrastructure projects simultaneously, collaborating seamlessly with internal mechanical, civil, structural, and CAD/3D modeling teams.
  • Mentorship & Team Leadership: Provide technical oversight, direct workflows, and deliver impactful mentorship to junior engineers and designers to foster a culture of ongoing technical growth.
  • Strategic Client Consultation: Serve as a trusted advisor to utility, industrial, and institutional clients, communicating complex technical solutions, presenting recommendations, and leading high‑level project discussions.
  • Modernization & Field Execution: Drive plant modernization, life extension, and energy optimization initiatives while supporting construction administration and vital field coordination efforts.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience: 10–20+ years of dedicated electrical engineering experience, with a proven track record in power plant electrical design and utility infrastructure.
  • Software Proficiency: Expert command of industry‑standard power systems analysis and electrical design software (e.g., SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower).
  • Technical Expertise: Deep technical mastery of power generation systems, energy management systems, electrical distribution, and critical utility infrastructure.
  • Mobility: Willingness to travel approximately 5–10% to support regional project sites and clients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Grid Infrastructure Expertise: Advanced experience in substation engineering and high‑voltage transmission & distribution (T&D) system design.
  • Modernization Mastery: Demonstrated success managing utility modernization, industrial retrofits, and comprehensive plant life extension projects.
  • Lifecycle Support: Robust experience delivering construction administration support and navigating field‑level troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations.
