Job summary

City Utilities of Springfield seeks an engineering intern to support the electric T&D design and engineering functions, focusing on poles identified for replacement and related projects. This paid internship requires full-time enrollment and maintains eligibility for the program through each semester.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• No prior engineering experience required; basic knowledge of AutoCAD and/or GIS preferred.

Responsibilities

• General engineering functions in design and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities for poles identified for replacement.
• Design line extensions to serve new large-scale commercial and industrial customers.
• Redesign existing facilities for load changes or new construction.
• Design reinforcement and whiteway lighting projects and power factor improvement efforts.
• Layout electric facility adjustments for highway, sewer, and municipal projects.
• Interface with outside agencies and obtain construction permits as needed.
• Review/update construction standards; prepare sketches, drawings, lists, cost and labor estimates.
• Analyze materials and work with vendors and equipment suppliers; stay current with technology.
• Review plans for compliance with NEC and NESC; ensure standards are met.
• Prepare contracts for bidding to secure contractors for line construction and maintenance.
• Design work subject to approval by a Registered Professional Engineer.

This position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES:
Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.

Pay Details:

$21.00 -$24.00/ hour

Work Schedule:

Between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday to Friday, 20-25 hours per week.

Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Electric T&D Specialist or designee, performs engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department’s goals. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all the duties described below. The primary focus of this position will be completing the design and engineering functions required to create projects for poles which have been identified for replacement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. 1. Performs general engineering functions in the design and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities, specifically pertaining to creating engineered drawings for poles identified for replacement.
2. 2. Designs line extensions to provide electric service to new large-scale commercial and industrial customers.
3. 3. Redesigns existing electrical facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial customers due to load or system changes, building additions, or other construction activities.
4. 4. Performs engineering design of reinforcement projects, whiteway lighting projects, and preventative maintenance and system power factor improvement projects.
5. 5. Performs engineering design and layout of electric facility adjustments as required for highway improvement projects, sewer projects, and other municipal improvement projects.
6. 6. Interfaces with outside agencies at all levels as required. Obtains construction permits from appropriate agencies.
7. 7. Reviews, updates, and prepares electric construction standards. Prepares job sketches, drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates as required.
8. 8. Analyzes various new materials and processes and works with vendors and equipment suppliers as required. Stays current on electric transmission and distribution technology.
9. 9. Reviews electric plans as part of City Plan Review process to ensure compliance with Electric Service Standards, including compliance with the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code.
10. 10. Prepares contracts for bidding purposes as required to secure contractors to perform work on electrical system such as line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.
11. 11. Designs work referenced above is subject to the approval of a Registered Professional Engineer to assure compliance with federal, state, or local requirements.
12. 12. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. No previous engineering experience is required. Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and/or GIS software is preferred.

Licensing/Certification:

Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to bend, stoop, and walk long distances over uneven terrain to survey electric line facilities. Must be able to express or exchange ideas and receive detailed information through oral and written communication. Must be able to pass the Ishihara color vision test and/or be able to visually differentiate and identify colors on computer monitor. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Must be able to visually differentiate between color-coded lines and symbols associated with utilization of AutoCAD and/or graphic work design tools.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside field work in all weather conditions.

Miscellaneous Requirements:

• New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may beineligible for the internship and their employment may be terminated.
