Job summary

Kiewit Power Engineering in Lenexa, KS is seeking an Electrical Engineer Intern for Summer 2027. You will support design engineering for power facilities, perform electrical calculations, develop plans, and coordinate with vendors and construction teams.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred; strong interest in power systems engineering.
  • Demonstrate organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Check manufacturers' wiring drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, and data sheets.
  • Prepare basic engineering calculations and drawings per Kiewit Power Engineers standards.
  • Coordinate electrical equipment contracts with vendors and support bid evaluations.
  • Develop cable and termination information using plant design software.
  • Maintain engineering records and lists as required; coordinate with engineers, designers, PMs, and vendors.

Position Overview

As an Electrical Engineer Intern, you will be a part of a growing team that supports all aspects of the construction process by performing innovative design engineering through brainstorming conceptual designs, performing and/or reviewing electrical calculations, developing plans, scheduling tasks to meet client needs, as well as mitigating risk to keep our construction crews safe.

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities
  • Checking manufacturer's wiring drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, data sheets and similar drawings
  • Researching and analyzing requirements from various engineering standards, contracts and proposal documents
  • Preparing basic engineering calculations and drawings following Kiewit Power Engineers standards
  • Providing draft equipment specifications for major electrical equipment
  • Performing bid evaluations
  • Coordinating electrical equipment contracts directly with equipment vendors
  • Maintaining engineering records and lists as required
  • Developing and managing cable and termination information utilizing plant design software
  • Coordinating work with other engineers, designers, project managers, construction personnel and vendors
  • Developing familiarity with departmental design standards, applicable engineering codes, and Kiewit Power Engineers policies
Qualifications

Education

  • Be pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and in good standing from ABET accredited institution
  • Above 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred
  • Demonstrate interest in power systems engineering
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Be a team player
  • Prefer individuals with junior or senior standing in ABET accredited program

Computer Skills

Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. The individual will develop familiarity with and learn to use the electrical department design software tools.

  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
