Job summary

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking electrical engineering students for a substation design internship in Lenexa, KS. You will assist with engineering and design duties, applying fundamentals to projects from 12kV to 500kV.

This paid internship supports EPC and detailed design work across North America, with mentorship from a team of experienced engineers. As part of the Power district, you will gain hands-on experience in relay coordination, grid design, and project coordination while working

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering with a power background preferred.
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create all design documents and drawings for a project, including wiring diagrams and BOMs.
  • Assist with relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations with minimal supervision.
  • Use engineering software to complete tasks like ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow studies.
  • Review project schedules with the project engineer to keep on track.
  • Properly use the document management system and apply standard engineering practices.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with engineers, customers, and others as needed.

Position Overview

We are looking to hire students pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Delivery focus! These interns will assist with performing engineering and design duties, which require the application of engineering principles and knowledge of substation design.

As part of this team of highly specialized design professionals,you will support a variety of substation, transmission and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV in both engineering detailed design and Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) projects for clients throughout the country.

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities
  • Work with project team to create all design documents and drawings for a project, including creating wiring diagrams from schematics, generating bills of materials, and applying field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision
  • Assist with engineering support tasks such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations with minimal supervision
  • Assist with the usage of engineering application software to complete engineering tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow and short circuit studies with minimal supervision
  • Review project schedules and work with project engineer to ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Properly use the document management system
  • Apply corporate standard engineering practices
  • Assist with project activities
  • Assist with the with the communication and coordination of project activities with project engineer, customer representatives, and others as needed
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work
  • Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party
Qualifications
  • Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university, with a power background preferred
  • Must be legally authorized to work without requiring sponsorship for employment to begin or continue employment with our company
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of:
    • - AC/DC fundamentals
    • - three phase power systems
    • - per-unit mathematics and symmetrical components
    • - substation components and their functions
    • - design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
    • - engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI
    • - common Word processing, Spreadsheet, and E-mail software
  • Working in a team environment
  • Communicating effectively with co-workers, vendors, clients, etc.

  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • May work at various different locations and conditions may vary.
