Job summary

Kiewit Power Engineering in Lenexa, KS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to support the development and improvement of design standards, while contributing to power project success. You will assist with P&ID design, equipment layouts, and design calculations under supervision.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering with GPA above 3.0, proficient in MS Office, and interested in power engineering.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing BS in Mechanical Engineering with strong academic record.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with hydraulic simulation tools (AFT Fathom/Arrow) preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; team-oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing mechanical piping and instrument diagrams for power plant systems.
  • Prepare design calculations and specifications for major equipment.
  • Create mechanical engineering designs including layouts and sketches.
  • Coordinate with drafters, designers, and engineers and review progress.

Position Overview

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern for the Lenexa, Kansas office. We are looking for Ideal candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success. Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts. Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career.

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design of mechanical piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) for power plant systems including steam cycle systems, boiler feed and condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer systems, conveying systems, and air and gas systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of design calculations and specifications for major power plant related equipment including, but not limited to, combustion turbines, steam turbines, boilers, condensers, cooling towers, and pumps.
  • Assist in preparing mechanical engineering designs, including layout, design sketches, and conceptual design.
  • Coordinate with other drafters, designers, and engineers assigned to the project or a task and review work progress and results.
Qualifications
  • Pursuing Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred
  • Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Preferred experience utilizing AFT Fathom or AFT Arrow hydraulic simulation software (or equivalent).
  • Strong work ethic - willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. Preferred: Interest in power
