Job description

About MorphLabs

MorphLabs is building non-invasive telekinesis: a brain interface that turns movement intent into action, starting with people underserved by existing technology.

We are starting with continuous, intuitive prosthetic control for upper-limb amputees, decoding movement intent from EEG in real time, without surgery or reliance on muscle sensors. We develop the hardware and models together, treating signal quality, learning and control as one problem. Prosthetics are where we start, not where we stop.

We are a small, scrappy, high-throughput team in NYC. We have raised a substantial pre-seed round, with our seed round underway, and we move quickly between research and building.

The role

We build our own headset, electrodes and amplifier, and the core hardware already works. The work now is making it smaller, longer-lasting and more capable, and integrating it with prosthetic hands, so an amputee can move a hand just by intending to.

As an Electrical Engineering Intern, you'll spend five months on one well-scoped hardware project, working directly with the founders. You'll own it from the first question to the result, and be expected to ship something real: a board revision we build, a measured gain in battery life, or a clear finding that changes what we try next.

This is not a side project. Interns work on the same boards, firmware and open problems as the rest of the team.

What you'll do
  • Miniaturization.Shrink our boards through layout, component choice and stackup, so the headset gets smaller and lighter.
  • Battery life and power management.Find where the power goes, cut it, and verify the gain with measurements. Improve charging and battery management.
  • RF and wireless.Diagnose and improve wireless links on real hardware: range, reliability and latency.
  • Embedded firmware.Write and debug firmware close to the hardware, and chase bugs across the hardware and software boundary.
  • New capabilities.Adding new modalities to existing designs and optimizing function.
  • Prosthetic integration.Connect our system electrically to prosthetic and robotic hands.
  • Bring-up and validation.Build and bring up boards in the lab, measure signal quality with the research team, and help validate our headset against third-party systems.
  • Ship what works.Turn working prototypes into documented, repeatable builds, and write up what worked and what didn't.
What you'll have
  • Ownership.Your boards go into the headset we build and test, not a demo.
  • Direct access to the founders. You'll work beside the people making the decisions, with no layers in between.
  • Data, every day.We record new EEG daily, so your hardware gets tested on real people constantly.
  • Our own hardware. We design the full stack in house, from electrodes to amplifier to firmware, so no part of the system is off limits.
  • An IRB already in place, covering both healthy participants and patients.
  • The resources to do the work.Equipment and components won't be the bottleneck.
Who we're looking for

We're hiring a small number of exceptional engineers: students, recent grads, or anyone already building serious hardware. We judge what you've built, not your school, degree or résumé. You don't need a background in biomedical engineering, neuroscience or prosthetics. You do need to be unusually strong at electrical engineering and unusually fast at turning a schematic into a working board.

What we expect:
  • One or more boards you designed and laid out yourself, end to end, that powered on, worked and got used. Owning one block of a team project doesn't count.
  • A design you made meaningfully smaller, cheaper or lower power, with before and after numbers to prove it
  • Bring-up you led: you can walk through each failure, how you isolated it on the bench, and what fixed it, without notes
  • Firmware you wrote running on hardware you designed
  • Fundamentals deep enough to reason from first principles on the spot: noise, grounding, power integrity, impedance matching, and why a board fails EMC
  • A record of speed: idea to working prototype in days or weeks, not semesters
  • Ownership without supervision: you find the next problem, fix it, and report what you learned
What sets candidates apart:
  • Flight hardware: CubeSat, rocketry or satellite boards where mass, power and RF budgets were hard limits and failure was final
  • Wireless designs you tuned and measured yourself: antenna matching, range testing, coexistence
  • Battery-powered devices where you profiled current down to the µA and extended runtime by a factor you can name
  • Low-noise analog front ends or biosignal acquisition at the microvolt level
  • Hardware other people actually use: a product, an open-source design or a competition win
  • Published research, patents or a public build log that shows your work

The bar is high on purpose.
