Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to apply advanced power systems knowledge to complex engineering tasks in Houston, TX. The role involves leading design, configuration, validation, and commissioning of automation and protection systems for SEL equipment and solutions.

The candidate will mentor junior staff, support proposals, and contribute to continuous improvement while upholding SEL Values and manufacturing principles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with electric power systems and industry practices.
  • Strong knowledge of electric power system protection and control, integration, automation, and communications applications.
  • Experience with electric power system design, studies, information and communication technology, and protective relay applications.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
  • Strong written, verbal, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

What You’ll Do
  • Apply technical knowledge of electric power systems, automation, and related SEL products to complete complex engineering assignments.
  • Lead customer training and assist with the design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning, and operation of automation and protection systems.
  • Lead project execution activities, ensuring work is completed within scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Support the development and presentation of proposals for SEL equipment, services, and system solutions.
  • Mentor and develop less experienced engineering staff and provide technical guidance as needed.
  • Model and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by helping teams understand, create, and simplify.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with electric power systems and industry practices.
  • Knowledge of electric power system protection and control, integration, automation, and communications applications.
  • Experience with electric power system design, studies, information and communication technology, and protective relay applications.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
  • Strong written, verbal, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Successful completion of background check and drug screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
  • Experience in an electrical utility, industrial facility, consulting engineering, or system integration environment.
  • Working knowledge of Vision or similar project tracking software.
Automation Focus Area

Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

  • Software, integration, and automation systems
  • Industrial controls and PLCs
  • IEC 61850, DNP, Modbus, and other industry communication protocols
  • Ethernet systems and protocol analyzers
  • SCADA systems and industry automation practices
