OVERVIEW

The Electrical Engineer for Motors and Generators is responsible for the electrical design, development, and optimization of IDEAL's rotating electrical equipment portfolio. This role applies specialized knowledge of electromagnetic principles, winding design, insulation systems, and power electronics to create high-performance motors, generators, and associated systems. Working within the Engineering department, this position collaborates with mechanical engineers, manufacturing, purchasing, quality personnel, sales, and service teams to deliver products that meet customer specifications while maintaining IDEAL's reputation for quality and reliability. The role requires analytical thinking, technical problem-solving abilities, and a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems in industrial rotating equipment. This is a full-time position based at IDEAL's Mansfield, Ohio Works facility, reporting to the Engineering Manager.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop electrical designs for rotating machinery including synchronous, induction, permanent magnet, switched reluctance, synchronous reluctance, and/or wound rotor designs (experience with some but not necessarily all technologies is acceptable)
  • Design and optimize synchronous excitation systems including brushless exciters, static excitation systems, and associated electrical regulation components
  • Develop high voltage (up to 13.8 kV) insulation systems that meet safety and reliability standards
  • Engineer considering various cooling methods such as open ventilation, force ventilated, TEWAC, TEAAC, water jacket-cooled systems based on application requirements
  • Perform electromagnetic calculations and analyses to optimize performance, efficiency, and thermal characteristics
  • Create and refine winding patterns, insulation systems, and electromagnetic circuits to meet customer requirements
  • Develop and validate analytical models using IDEAL's proprietary software to predict machine performance
  • Calculate and specify electrical parameters including voltage ratings, current requirements, power factor, and efficiency metrics
  • Determine requirements for electrical protection systems and specify sensors for monitoring parameters like temperature
  • Prepare, review, and approve test reports documenting machine performance and standards compliance
  • Support certification efforts with regulatory bodies (UL, CSA, ABS, DNV, IEEE, military standards, etc.)
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers for proper integration of electrical and mechanical systems
  • Work with manufacturing to develop production-friendly designs that meet electrical performance requirements
  • Review and optimize existing electrical designs for performance, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Support testing and validation of prototypes and new designs through data analysis
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues and develop solutions to improve performance
  • Prepare technical documentation including specifications, test procedures, and design guidelines
  • Evaluate new technologies and materials for potential application
  • Support sales efforts by providing technical expertise during customer interactions and proposals
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (extensive hands-on experience may suffice)
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical design of rotating machinery
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic principles applied to rotating equipment
  • Experience with winding design and configuration for various electric motors and generators
  • Ability to learn and utilize IDEAL's proprietary design software
  • Knowledge of insulation systems, materials, and testing methods
  • Understanding of power electronics and control systems
  • Familiarity with industry standards (NEMA, IEC, IEEE, etc.)
  • Experience with testing and performance validation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Project management skills to handle multiple initiatives
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, engineering software, cloud collaboration tools, and ERP systems
  • Experience with custom engineering for specialized applications is highly valued
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic calculation and simulation tools (MotorCAD, ANSYS Maxwell, JMAG, etc.) is highly valued
  • Ability to conduct electromagnetic FEA for design validation is highly valued
  • Passion for IDEAL's mission and American manufacturing
WORKING CONDITIONS AND WORK HOURS
  • Minimum of 8 hours daily, 40 hours weekly
  • Office environment with occasional travel to customer or supplier sites
  • Visits to manufacturing areas may be required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Regularly required to talk, hear, read, and write/type. Physical activities include standing, sitting, walking, handling objects, reaching, and occasional stooping or kneeling. Must have vision abilities including close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. May need to inspect equipment in manufacturing areas.
