Job summary

Salas O’Brien, Inc. in Bethesda, MD is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support Fed-Florida Business Unit projects. You will design interior/exterior lighting, power distribution, fire alarm and life safety systems, and perform arc flash studies with analysis and mitigation recommendations.

The role reports to the Director of Electrical Design Operations and requires 5+ years in EE, EIT credential, and CAD/Revit proficiency. Travel up to 25% with a competitive benefits package.

Qualifications

• BS Electrical Engineering degree required from ABET-accredited program.
• 5+ years of professional Electrical Engineering experience.
• EIT Certification required; PE Certification preferred but not required.
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications.
• Working knowledge of ASCE, ASHRAE, ICC, ASTM, UFC codes; familiarity with FBC, IBC, USGBC LEED and AFMAN/SSMAN is preferred.
• Experience with CAD, Revit, Bluebeam Revu or other modeling/drafting software is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform project direct billable functions with a target utilization rate of 85–90%.
• Assist engineering teams from concept design through testing, ensuring deliverables meet client standards.
• Maintain project documentation including design specs, test plans, and progress reports.
• Communicate effectively with customers, contractors, and project teams; fill gaps in communication as needed.
• Conduct site design, permitting, assessments, and construction management tasks.
• Adhere to PMP and QC programs and coordinate with EOR/Design Lead and Project Manager.
• Support Fed-Florida quality control standards and pass-through services/consulting.

Job Summary:

The Electrical Engineer functions as an integral part of the design team for the Fed-FloridaBusinessUnit projects. Technical duties in Electrical engineering require adaptability and versatility. Examples of the type of work to be performed include interior and exterior lighting system design; medium voltage power distribution for campus and industrial environments; fire alarm and life safety system design and integration; lightning protection system layout and risk assessment; and arc flash studies with incident energy analysis and mitigation recommendations. Additional responsibilities encompass low voltage power distribution, emergency and standby power systems, lighting controls and automation, short circuit and load flow studies, telecommunications and data infrastructure, security and access control systems, construction administration and field support, detailed cost analyses and material take-offs for electrical systems, as well as facility condition assessments and capital asset management planning for electrical infrastructure.

This position operationally reports to the Director of Electrical Design Operations.

Technical Responsibilities (85-90%):

• Perform project direct billable functions and responsibilities to maintain a personal utilization rate of 85%-90%.
• Assist our engineering teams in various phases of project development, from concept design to implementation and testing. Ensure project team members create deliverables that meet or exceed the customer’s expectations and standards. Own issues and drive them to resolution with internal and external customers.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive project documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and progress reports.
• Communicate effectively in person and in writing to keep customers, contractors, and project teams well informed of pertinent information in a timely manner. Assumes responsibility for filling in gaps in customer communication.
• Responsible for performing engineering tasks such as site design, permitting, assessments, and construction management.
• Adheres to Project Management Plans (PMP) and Quality Control (QC) programs as assigned but does not change them without approval.
• Communicates design concerns or input to Engineer of Record (EOR) and/or Design Lead and Project Manager.
• Ensure adherence to Fed-Florida’s quality control standards, including pass-through services/consulting.

Business Development Responsibilities (5-10%)

• Tactical business development – As requested, review RFP/RFQ/SOW as well as prebid drawings and specifications to determine resource requirements and risk/benefit potential for each assigned proposal opportunity to provide input to the Director of Electrical Engineering.

Operational Responsibilities (5-15%)

• Assists the Director of Electrical Engineering in specialized projects to advance the growth of Fed-Florida. These tasks may include but are not limited to mentoring interns/new hires, providing input for process improvements, assisting in the development of our continuously growing training program.

The expected base salary range for this role in Merritt Island is $80,000-&100,000 USD per year and in Bethesda, MD is $100,000-$125,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
