Overview
We’re looking for a Senior Substation Design Engineer with over 10 years of experience in physical substation design and the ability to lead capital projects with minimal supervision. This role will focus on the full lifecycle of substation projects—covering everything from new station builds to modifications and upgrades of existing infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Lead physical design efforts for new substations and upgrade projects, including equipment replacements (breakers, switchgear, etc.)
- Prepare and review one-line diagrams, physical layouts, grounding plans, and lightning protection systems
- Manage and support capital work related to substations, including scope, design, and coordination
- Perform or review AC/DC station service studies, grounding, and lighting designs
- Oversee or support equipment upgrades, including circuit breakers, power transformers, switchgear, etc.
- Participate in QA/QC reviews and ensure compliance with engineering standards and utility requirements
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and field personnel
- Take a lead role in projects with minimal oversight and be accountable for deliverables
Must-Have Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands-on substation design experience (physical design focus)
- Proven track record leading new substation builds and equipment upgrade projects
- Proficiency in physical layout design, grounding, lightning protection, and lighting systems
- Strong working knowledge of substation capital project workflows
- Self-starter capable of independently managing design tasks and project deliverables
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- PE license (Professional Engineer) strongly preferred
- Prior experience mentoring or training junior engineers (QA/QC involvement a plus)
- Familiarity with utility standards and processes for substation work
