Job description

Electrical Engineering Department Manager

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Working arrangement: Office-based
Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Compensation: Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits

The Opportunity

We are supporting a global engineering, design and advisory consultancy in the appointment of an Electrical Engineering Department Manager for its Birmingham office.

This is a senior, hands-on leadership position within a growing US operation that delivers complex engineering projects for process and manufacturing clients. The company supports projects throughout the United States, with particular expertise across pulp and paper, mining and metals, chemicals, food and beverage, biorefining and other asset-intensive industries.

The successful candidate will lead the electrical engineering function while remaining actively involved in technical delivery. This is not a purely administrative management role: you will act as Engineer of Record, provide technical oversight and support the delivery of electrical designs, studies and reports requiring a Professional Engineer's seal.

The position could suit either an established engineering manager or an accomplished Senior, Lead or Principal Electrical Engineer ready to take the next step into departmental leadership. The essential combination is strong technical credibility, an active PE licence and the ability to lead people, projects and client relationships.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop a team delivering electrical engineering design and advisory services for complex industrial and manufacturing projects.
  • Manage electrical scopes of work from early studies and concept development through detailed engineering, construction support and commissioning.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record and provide the technical authority required for designs, studies and reports.
  • Remain close to the engineering, providing hands‑on technical direction and supporting the team when project demands require it.
  • Act as a primary interface with clients, project managers and business-development stakeholders.
  • Develop project work plans, engineering schedules, resource plans and fee estimates.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary and international delivery teams to align resources and meet project requirements.
  • Review and approve departmental work, maintaining high standards of technical quality and quality assurance.
  • Mentor engineers and support their professional, technical and career development.
  • Lead recruitment, retention and succession planning for the department.
  • Manage staff assignments, workload, utilisation and billability in line with business objectives.
  • Support client development, project pursuits and the preparation of technical proposals.
  • Build productive relationships with engineering leaders across the organisation's international offices.
  • Promote a collaborative, accountable and safety-first culture.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering or a related discipline.
  • An active US Professional Engineer licence.
  • At least 10 years of electrical engineering design and consulting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards and engineering practices.
  • Experience delivering work for industrial, manufacturing or process-industry clients.
  • The technical ability and willingness to remain involved in engineering delivery.
  • Experience leading projects, mentoring engineers or supervising technical teams.
  • Confidence working directly with clients and communicating complex technical information clearly.
  • Experience developing scopes, schedules, budgets and fee estimates.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and provide sound technical direction with limited supervision.
  • Strong written communication, reporting and technical‑documentation skills.
  • A commitment to safety and the ability to foster a safety-first culture.

Applicants do not necessarily need to have spent many years in a formal department-management role. Senior electrical engineers who have led projects, mentored colleagues, chaired client meetings and are ready to progress into departmental leadership are strongly encouraged to apply.

Particularly Relevant Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly regarded:

  • Management or supervision of electrical engineering teams.
  • Accountability for staff utilisation, billability and departmental performance.
  • Industrial power distribution systems and microgrids.
  • Medium- or high-voltage substations, transmission or distribution.
  • Energy‑storage systems.
  • Power‑system studies and modelling using SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower or similar software.
  • Protection and control, SCADA and power‑system automation.
  • Cogeneration or combined heat and power systems.
  • Thermal utility plants and associated distribution systems, including steam, hot water and chilled water.
  • High‑voltage systems for large‑scale manufacturing facilities.
  • Work involving clients, contractors, OEMs, owner‑developers, service providers or lenders.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Take ownership of an important electrical engineering function within an established international consultancy.
  • Join a role offering genuine progression, influence and visibility.
  • Lead a capable team while remaining technically engaged.
  • Work on significant industrial and manufacturing projects supported by an international engineering network.
  • Collaborate with specialists from a wide range of disciplines, cultures and technical backgrounds.
  • Contribute to projects spanning the complete lifecycle, from strategy and feasibility through detailed design, construction and start‑up.
  • Receive competitive, performance‑oriented compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, paid vacation and holidays, and a 401(k) with company match.

This position is based in the Birmingham office. The department manager is expected to work face‑to‑face with the team, so candidates should be based locally or willing to relocate.

Applicants must already have the right to live and work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship.

Our client is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes applications from qualified candidates of all backgrounds.
