Job description

Tired of programming the same machines and solving the same problems?

We're looking for a Senior Controls Engineer who wants more than routine PLC programming. Here, you'll take ownership of custom automation projects from code to commissioning, working with robotics, vision systems, and motion controls to bring complex machines to life. Every project brings a different engineering challenge, and you'll have the opportunity to see your work through to the moment the customer puts it to the test.

Job Summary

We're hiring an experienced Senior Controls Engineer to lead controls programming, integration, testing, and commissioning for custom industrial automation equipment. You'll collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and design teams to develop sophisticated machinery used across industries such as medical manufacturing, defense, and electronics.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, taking ownership of their work, and supporting equipment through installation and customer acceptance.

What You'll Do
  • Own PLC programming, ladder logic development, HMI configuration, and controls integration from initial machine build through customer acceptance.
  • Integrate and commission industrial robots, machine vision systems, servo drives, sensors, and motion control technologies to deliver reliable automated equipment.
  • Test machine sequences, troubleshoot electrical and mechanical interfaces, and resolve controls issues during equipment builds and startup.
  • Support customer-site commissioning, site acceptance testing, field updates, and occasional emergency service while working directly with customers and internal engineering teams.
  • Develop clear technical documentation, mentor technicians during equipment builds, and contribute to improvements in engineering processes and quality standards.
What You'll Bring
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or PLC programming.
  • Strong PLC ladder logic programming skills, with structured text or function block programming experience considered a plus.
  • Experience developing HMI or SCADA applications, preferably with Rockwell PanelView or FactoryTalk Optix.
  • Hands-on experience integrating industrial robots, machine vision systems, servo or stepper motion controls, and electrical safety circuits.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, DeviceNet, or IO-Link.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, troubleshoot AC/DC electrical systems, and understand basic pneumatic controls.
  • Confidence troubleshooting complex automation systems independently, including at customer facilities, with a willingness to travel as needed.

An associate's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field is preferred, although equivalent hands-on experience will be considered. A bachelor's degree is a plus.

We offer compensation equivalent to $80,000-$100,000 annually, depending on experience, in an hourly position eligible for overtime pay. Customer-site travel time is compensated at the applicable hourly rate, with an additional travel incentive.

Our benefits include an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), a 401(k) with company match, health, dental, and life insurance, short- and long-term disability coverage, paid time off, paid holidays, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement.
