Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing company specializing in custom industrial automation and robotics. The Controls Engineer will play a key role in designing, developing, integrating, and commissioning advanced control systems for a variety of manufacturing applications. This is a hands‑on position that requires strong technical expertise, creativity, collaboration, and the ability to solve complex automation challenges.

The Controls Engineer will work closely with mechanical, electrical, software, and project teams to develop reliable, high‑performance automation solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical controls, PLC programming, robotics, HMI development, and motion control, along with a passion for working on complex automation projects from concept through installation and commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop control systems for custom robotic automation projects, including PLC and HMI programming.
  • Integrate industrial robots, robotic arms, motion control systems, and servo drives into automated manufacturing solutions.
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs using platforms such as Allen‑Bradley and Siemens.
  • Develop and configure HMI applications to support machine operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to ensure complete system functionality and performance.
  • Troubleshoot and debug electrical control systems during development, installation, startup, and commissioning.
  • Support the integration and programming of industrial robots, including FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, and similar platforms.
  • Provide technical support and training to internal teams and customers.
  • Read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks and protocols, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, and Profinet.
  • Ensure automation systems comply with applicable electrical, machine safety, and quality standards.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including electrical schematics, control documentation, system layouts, and user manuals.
  • Participate in project planning, estimating, scheduling, and cost analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with customers and internal teams to understand requirements and develop effective automation solutions.
  • Participate in onsite installation, startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
  • Approach projects as a team player by being collaborative, self‑motivated, dependable, and willing to take ownership of responsibilities.
Requirements And Desired Experience
  • Hands‑on experience with PLC programming, HMI development, and industrial robotics.
  • 5+ years of experience in Controls Engineering with a focus on industrial automation and robotics.
  • Proficiency with PLC platforms such as Allen‑Bradley and/or Siemens.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with industrial robots such as FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of motion control systems, servo drives, and automation equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create electrical schematics and panel layouts.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus, and Profinet.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable machine safety standards and risk assessment methodologies, including ANSI, NFPA, and ISO standards.
  • Experience with electrical panel design, wiring, troubleshooting, and system commissioning.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Highly organized and detail‑oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or relevant certifications, such as Rockwell or Siemens, are a plus.
  • Experience working in a custom automation, systems integration, robotics, or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% for customer installations, commissioning, and service support.
Compensation (DOE):

$110k - $135k annual base salary
