Job summary

Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana, is seeking an assembler to build and repair locomotive cables and components. You will read engineering drawings, verify cable assemblies with testing tools, and work with engineering to resolve issues. Must read wire lists, use a tape measure, and solder connections as needed.

This is a production hourly role with safety procedures and PPE required in a high-noise rail environment. The team emphasizes collaboration and learning on the job.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Able to read wire running list and schematics.
  • Proficient with a tape measure and basic hand tools.
  • Two years of locomotive pinning and plugging experience required.
  • Able to solder electrical connections.
  • Working knowledge of Imagesite and LN systems.
  • Team player willing to jump in, help and learn.

Responsibilities

  • Build new test cables from engineering drawings.
  • Maintain and repair existing cables.
  • Pack cables for upcoming orders into marked totes.
  • Organize and catalog in-house parts and cables.
  • Use master schedule to anticipate orders.
  • Collaborate with engineering to resolve cable issues.
  • Verify cables with multimeter and other test equipment.
  • Assist testers with repairs of mis-wired plugs.
  • Read and follow schematics.

Essential and Physical Activities
  • Strength – Must be able to lift and carry up to 35lbs, push and pull up to 50lb;
  • Motion – Constant walking Frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting and overhead reaching and climbing ladders;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms;
  • Work Environment – Works on varied surfaces, concrete floors, and gravel, rail car and locomotive floors. Works at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives. Work in confined spaces. Non-temperature control environment, all weather conditions with high noise and high dust levels;
  • Emotional Demands – Due to the working environment, noise, dust, personal protective equipment, employee must be comfortable working alone;
  • Safety – Safety Sensitive positions because it works in and around active tracks, rail cars, locomotives, and other moving equipment. Employee must abide by all safety protocols, health/medical screenings and utilize all required PPE. Included but not limited to metatarsal boots, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, aprons, ear protection, etc.
Education / Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Able to read wire running list
  • Proficient with tape measure
  • 2 years of locomotive Pinning and plugging experience required. Knowledge of AI’s regarding pinning
  • Able to solder electrical connections
  • Working knowledge of imagesite, LN,
