As an EHS Technician, you will:
- Collect and transport hazardous and non-hazardous waste to designated accumulation areas.
- Review Hazardous Materials Collection Tags for accuracy, assign DOT and waste codes, and document rationale for waste classifications.
- Separate waste by chemical compatibility, ensure appropriate secondary containment with inspectable conditions, and label containers according to regulatory requirements and established procedures.
- Conduct quarterly inspections and contamination surveys of radioactive waste storage areas.
- Perform waste sampling, consolidation, and packaging in preparation for compliant off-site shipments.
- Assist with the review and validation of shipping documentation and billing statements.
- Conduct audits of waste and laboratory environments to evaluate compliance with regulations and best practices.
- Identify and document laboratory chemical hazards and supply signage.
- Perform data entry and maintain records associated with hazardous waste, audits, and inspections.
- Support programmatic functions such as dosimetry, instrument calibrations, radioactive material inventories, leak testing, targeted audits, and sampling.
- Assist with spill response and clean-up.
- Draft procedural documents and correspondence, and support and/or generate reports from the departmental database.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Associates degree in environmental science, natural science, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, fire safety, other related field or equivalent experience.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong recordkeeping abilities.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to follow written procedures and regulatory guidelines accurately.
- Proficient with basic computer applications, including data entry, document creation, and database navigation.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators.
- Ability to lift and transport materials using appropriate safety equipment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural science, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, fire safety, other related field.
- 2+ years of experience working in environmental health and safety, hazardous materials handling, health physics, laboratory environment, industrial hygience, fire safety, waste management, or a closely related
- Understanding of the physical properties and hazards of chemicals and ionizing radiation.
- Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations such as EPA , DOT , OSHA , and/or ionizing and/or non-ionizing radiation regulations and standards.
- General knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to accumulation, storage, transport, and disposal of regulated wastes and ionizing radiation and/or health physics.
