Job summary

The University of Miami seeks an Environmental Health and Safety professional to oversee EHS programs (Laser Safety, Biological Safety, HazMat) with limited supervision.

You will conduct evaluations, approve control measures, and deliver comprehensive training to faculty, staff, and students working with hazardous materials.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)

Responsibilities

  • Oversee applicable EHS program(s) (e.g., Laser Safety, Biological Safety, Haz Mat) under limited supervision.
  • Assist in procedures to safeguard employees and communities and ensure facilities comply with regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive EHS evaluations and approve control measures.
  • Deliver EHS education and training to UM faculty, staff, and students working with hazardous agents.
  • Perform EHS audits and inspections per regulations and guidelines.
  • Investigate campus accidents and help implement corrective action plans.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures for incidents involving hazardous materials.
  • Maintain ongoing EHS education to stay current with developments in the field.
  • Adhere to University policies and safeguard assets.
  • Support the lab inspection program and risk mitigation initiatives.
  • Review protocols to ensure compliance within facilities and across the university.
  • Assist in keeping safety data sheets updated in the digital database.
  • Design posters, training, and safety resources.
  • Conduct safety-related training as needed and participate in incident responses.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees, under limited supervision, the applicable EHS program(s), i.e., Laser Safety, Biological Safety, Haz Mat etc.
  • Assists in procedures to safeguard employees and surrounding communities and to ensure that all facilities are in compliance with regulations.
  • Conducts comprehensive EHS evaluations and ensures appropriate control measures are in place as well as approving alternate controls.
  • Ensures the minimization of risk related to non-compliance with regulations and policies governing the conduct of the applicable EHS program(s).
  • Delivers EHS education and training to any and all University of Miami faculty, staff, and students who work with or have potential for exposure to harmful agents.
  • Performs EHS audits and inspections in respect to current regulations and guidelines on scheduled intervals or more frequent as deemed necessary.
  • Investigates accidents occurring on University campuses, and assists with implementing and tracking corrective action plans.
  • Participates in emergency response procedures for incidents involving hazardous agents and materials, and responds to incidents as appropriate.
  • Maintains continuing EHS education in order to stay abreast of developments in the applicable environmental health and safety program.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
  • Actively provide support to the University of Miami community about chemical safety by giving advice, managing chemicals, and implementing hands-on risk control measures.
  • Participates and assists in chemical concerns or complaints response, evaluations, or investigations.
  • Ensure quality and service level on technical measurements by testing, calibrating, and proper usage of typical chemical hygiene monitoring tools and hazard engineering control devices.
  • Be able to provide support for chemical safety programs such as chemical hazard communication, exposure determination, health monitoring, chemical hygiene programs, etc.
  • Participate in and assist in the annual lab inspection program.
  • Review protocols, procedures, and instructions to ensure appropriate risk mitigation, training, and compliance with applicable regulations within facilities and across the university.
  • Participate in keeping the safety data sheet in the digital database on the University of Miami platform.
  • Design posters, develop training, and participate in other creative endeavors in the development of safety resources.
  • Conduct safety-related training as needed.
  • Participate in the response to accidents and exposures to hazardous chemicals.
  • Become a HAZWOPER 40 technician and other achieve other safety credentials as identified.
  • Participate in incident response as occasions arise.
  • Provide support to institutional committees, departments and groups as necessary.
  • Support other EHS initiatives that require team response and/or participation.
  • Other duties relating to EHS support of the University as necessary.
