You will own the facility audit program from planning through reporting, perform risk assessments, design testing, conduct fieldwork on site, and report findings to site and corporate leadership.
Primary Recruiting Services has been engaged by a publicly traded power generation company to fill a newly created position on their internal audit team. The seat is dedicated entirely to auditing their generating facilities. This is not a financial reporting or SOX role, it is operational and regulatory compliance auditing for someone who understands how plants actually run.
The work
You'll own the facility audit program from planning through reporting. Each quarter you build the risk assessment that determines which sites get reviewed, align that plan with regional operations leadership, design the testing approach, run fieldwork on location, and deliver findings to site and corporate stakeholders. Subject matter spans occupational safety programs, environmental compliance, maintenance and reliability practices, outage readiness, and adherence to industry reliability standards including NERC.
Day to day you'll partner closely with EHS and engineering teams, pull and analyze data from maintenance management systems, environmental monitoring platforms, and incident reporting, and conduct walkdowns to confirm that documented procedures hold up in practice. You'll serve as auditor-in-charge on your projects and report to the head of the internal audit function.
Travel runs roughly one week per quarter across several sites, and the schedule is built by you rather than dictated to you.
Background we're looking for
Utility experience is not a requirement. If you've done this work in refining, chemicals, midstream, mining, metals, industrial manufacturing, or as a consultant auditing those facilities it carries over directly.
Why it's worth a call
Newly created headcount driven by growth, not a replacement hire. Genuine ownership of your projects in a group that doesn't operate like a conventional audit department. Regular exposure to operations executives. Clear progression to senior auditor and eventually audit management. Competitive annual incentive with a strong payout history, generous 401(k) match, employee stock purchase program, and solid PTO. Relocation support available for the right person. Office sits minutes from a major airport, which matters given the travel.
