Job summary

UPMC in Altoona, PA seeks a licensed Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) to support licensed dentists and oral surgeons. The role covers a wide range of EFDA duties, including restorative procedures, radiography, sedation/sterile techniques, and patient documentation.

Casual schedule with 1-2 days per week, typically Mondays and Wednesdays. Requires graduation from an approved EFDA program and PA EFDA license, plus BLS and radiology certification.

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate of an approved Dental Assistant Program.
• Must have a certificate from an approved Expanded Function Dental Assistant Program.
• Experience Required: At least one year of experience as a Dental Assistant.
• Radiology Certification for capturing radiographs.
• Maintain an expanded function dental assistant license from the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.

Responsibilities

• Assist dentists/oral surgeons within the scope of practice as an EFDA under direct supervision.
• Perform mouth mirror inspections, place/remove retraction chord, monitor post-surgical bleeding, and assist with amalgam and restorative tasks.
• Pour, trim, and evaluate diagnostic casts; take impressions; assist with brackets, bands, and archwires.
• Perform coronal polishing, radiographs, sterilization, and ensure infection control standards.
• Maintain inventory, prepare purchase orders, and organize operatories for each clinic session.
