Summary

Under a physician's direction, the technologist performs adult/neonatal EEG studies. Responsibilities include explaining the test procedure to the patient, applying recording, monitoring, and stimulating electrodes, recognizing and eliminating artifact, calibrating equipment, troubleshooting malfunctions, selecting amplifier settings, and providing technical descriptions of EEG studies.

Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of neuro-anatomy, physiology, electronics, electrical safety, EEG instrumentation, and related medical conditions.
  • Verify patient and physician's orders, gather information, and provide accurate history.
  • Check all equipment for proper function, inventory, operation, and cleanliness.
  • Record EEGs according to laboratory standards, including the 10-20 system; provide initial interpretation and communicate urgent findings with physicians.
  • Review EEG files, save appropriate sections, and prepare for long-term monitoring.
  • Educate ICU nurses and hospital personnel on equipment and electrode removal techniques.
  • Schedule patient testing and maintain communication with inpatient units.
  • Ensure billing accuracy.
  • Participate in teaching and technical meetings; maintain CEUs/Credentials.
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Perform duties aligned with Penn Medicine values and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Credentials
  • BCLS, required.
  • Must achieve EEG registry within 2 years of hire, required.
  • Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R.EEG T.), preferred.
Education or Experience
  • H.S. Diploma/GED, required.
  • Associate's Degree, preferred.
  • Completion of accredited EEG program or 3+ years EEG experience, required.
