Job summary

Douglas County School District seeks an Educational Interpreter to facilitate communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a K-12 educational environment. The role supports teachers and staff by interpreting instructional and incidental conversations as needed.

Under supervision, the interpreter will attend classes with D/HH students, assist with test-taking and office interpretations, and help maintain safety and classroom order.

Qualifications

• Interprets all communication including formalized instruction, classroom discussions, and incidental conversations.
• Collaborates with classroom teachers, other Education Support Professionals, and the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing.
• Knowledge of MCE, PSE, ASL, or Cued Language and deaf education.

Responsibilities

• Attend classes with D/HH students facilitating communication understandable to the deaf/hard of hearing student.
• Assist teaching staff with classroom and school activities including supervision of D/HH students test taking, accompanying student for interpreting service at the office, counselor, support staff, and athletic coaches.
• Maintains safety and discipline by supervising and/or assisting in the supervision of students on playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, library, and during busing.
• Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, directs parents to teacher for any communication regarding students for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
• Acts as liaison between general education teachers, resource teachers, and teachers of the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
• Previews instructional information to adequately prepare to interpret lessons.
• Assist student in conflict resolution.
