Job summary

Rochester School District in Rochester, WA, seeks a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Interpreter Assistant to support certified teachers by translating instructions, guiding deaf students, and facilitating classroom communication in small-group and individual settings.

This 31.25-hour-per-week position follows the adopted school calendar and requires college credits or an AA, EIPA 4.0 or RID NIC with IEPA passing, and a professional, collaborative approach to diverse student needs.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college and/or AA required or completion of the ETS test.
  • Passed the EIPA with a minimum score of 4.0 OR have the National Interpreter Certification (RID) with IEPA written test passing.
  • Experience interpreting for the deaf using fluent American Sign Language.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to follow directions and to follow through independently on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing.
  • Evidence of emotional maturity and stability for the specialized work involved.
  • Sensitivity to cultural, developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of students and community.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of certified teachers, prepare for small-group and individual instruction.
  • Interprets/translates classroom instruction and directions to deaf students; convey instructor’s intent as well as spoken words.
  • Uses reverse interpretation relaying questions from deaf students to instructor; encourage deaf students to use Standard Sign.
  • Assists the classroom instructor in meeting needs of deaf students and communicates instructions from the instructor to deaf students.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected of certificated teacher.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with co-workers, staff and the public.
  • Participate regularly in staff meetings, in-service programs, workshops and seminars.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
