Job Summary:
The Educational Sign Language Interpreter facilitates seamless communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their teachers, school staff, service providers, and peers within the educational environment. This position provides accurate, real-time interpretation between spoken English and the student’s primary manual communication system (ASL, PSE, or MCE). Additionally, the interpreter may provide instructional support and tutoring under the direction of certified teaching staff. The position is directly supervised by the building principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a classroom environment.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required.
Certification Requirements (Must meet at least one):
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher
National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification, OR
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Certification.
Experience & Professional Standards:
2 to 3 years of professional ASL or related interpreting experience (preferred).
Prior classroom or instructional experience (preferred).
Demonstrated adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
Equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered.
Licensure & Transportation:
Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable personal transportation for job-related travel (reimbursed at the approved state mileage rate).
American Sign Language (ASL) and alternative visual/manual communication systems, including specialized vocabulary, regional variations, and Deaf culture.
Basic instructional practices, classroom management strategies, behavior modification techniques, and student-teacher interaction dynamics.
Key principles of child growth, developmental milestones, and unique behavioral/learning characteristics of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
Expressively and receptively interpret fluently between spoken/written English and sign language systems, including simultaneous interpretation and voice-to-sign translation.
Adapt signing parameters to match varying instructional styles, academic content levels, and student comprehension levels (Grades K–12).
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records, family communication, and school matters in accordance with FERPA and district guidelines.
Bridge cultural boundaries and foster inclusive, collaborative relationships among students, faculty, administration, and parents.
Demonstrate flexibility, professional integrity, sound judgment, and clear written/verbal communication.
Provide accurate, real-time interpretation for students in academic, non-academic, extra-curricular, and official school settings (e.g., assemblies, field trips, progress conferences).
Interpret classroom instructions, lectures, presentations, and peer interactions, matching the delivery to the student's primary communication mode and learning level.
Assist certified teachers in modifying and adapting educational materials and classroom presentations to meet accessibility needs.
Support the implementation of goals outlined in student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Deliver targeted tutoring and supplemental instruction under the direct supervision of certified teaching staff.
Conduct staff training sessions or in-service workshops on basic ASL and Deaf awareness as requested.
Maintain professional standards, safety practices, and compliance with all district policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal or program director.
Communication & Hearing: Sufficient hearing ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to discern spoken conversation, instruction, and ambient classroom sounds across standard speech ranges.
Visual Acuity: Adequate visual observation capabilities to review text, read written directions, and accurately translate visual/manual sign language.
Manual Dexterity: High level of manual dexterity and stamina required to sign continuously for extended periods.
Mobility & Physical Effort: Capacity to sit, stand, and move about the classroom throughout the day; ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
Terms: Position parameters, working calendar, and hours determined by school year assignment. Regular attendance is an essential function of this role.
Evaluation: Performance evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with district guidelines.
Background Check: Upon hire, selected candidates must successfully pass a criminal justice fingerprinting and background check.
